  1. I bought some Nature Valley Mixed Berry bars from
    BJ's Warehouse (Sam's, Costco's???) that have done
well for pre-ride/ride food. They have about 26g of
carbs, 2g protein and 140 calories. Amazingly they keep
me from bonking out. I bought a box of 35 bars for less
than $20 I believe - a better value than some hyped sports
    bars.

I've also started drinking soy milk post-ride, which has
the recommended 4/1 carb/protein ration and it has
worked well as a recovery drink. Soy smoothies are
    also available at different flavors.

Just thoght I'd pass it along.

Although I seldom have to eat DURING rides these days (not enough epics
lately I guess), I pretty much only consume "breakfast"-type bars (along
with fruit and maybe peanut butter crackers) for "energy food". That and a
strong pot of coffee seems to work quite well for me. (I carry a gel thing
in case I bonk; almost never have to eat it.)

Well let's not get carried away here! Mexican food and a proprietary blend
of Sprite and pink lemonade is the choice of chumpions.

Peanut butter and honey sandwiches are less expensive and better fuel.

Eat a well balanced meal (including a beer) after riding instead of
    just drinking hype-milk.

These are just "one" suggestions. All others that folks suggested
    have worked for me too.

My Dad always swore by those. Said it was the only thing he could drip on a
    half-built boat that wouldn't leave a stain. ;-)

Still have one now and again to remember.

  11. on my last long ride i took a zip-lock of raisins and one of raw
(unsalted) sunflower seeds. Eating a little of each every 5 miles
    seemed to work.

    of course, every body's different.

protein and carb in the first half hour after you are done is what your body
needs. Lately I've been keeping a bag of mixed nuts in my bag, and eat a
handful or two.. really takes the edge off, keeps me from either bonking or
going on a major fridge raid when I get home.

What my body needed Friday was a fat cheese burger, greasy Lays potato
    chips and a lemonade.

Then a quick 15 minute siesta on the sun warmed rocks, and I was ready for
    some more riding :-)

What's wrong with decimating the fridge after a good ride??
