RFC chat -- where is it, which server/channel ??

up with my name right away.

When I get on via the Web, I get logged in as "Anonymous" then have to
change the nick.
Is there a way I can come up with my name right away without going through
that? (I don't like to play around when everyone is saying "Hi".)

Your settings are preset in the irc client. They are not preset when
you use the java web interface, so you need to take the step of
manually changing from anon to "you" every time. It's only a couple
seconds of work. In fact, you can type your name in the nickname box
while java is still booting up and hit enter as soon as you're online.
How hard is that?

Nope, the only way to prevent that is to use mIRC or something similar
instead of the java link. Sorry.

mIRC is semi freeware, it is free but you can pay to register it.
It is easy to use and anyone of the irc oldtimers will be able to talk you
thru any setup issues you don't grasp.

The use of an IRC Client allows for so much more...It's like the difference
between reading Newsgroups in google or on a personelized news reader.

It's not *that* different for the basic user, Alan. I didn't use
mIRC, chatZilla or the web client any differently. If all you want to
do is chat, you're fine with the web client; if you want to F around,
go for something fancier. But in all honesty - for someone who is
just trying to figure out if chatting is for them, the java interface
is fine. They can upgrade later if they are interested in doing so.
