  1. What this article points to is that in any subject, including iron, there
are minimal, optimal, and maximal levels of nutritional substances.
Minimal to have any effect, optiimun to get the best balance between
intake and result, and maximal when adding more leads to negative effects.

As mentioned before, low iron intake is the world's number one health
problem because too little iron causes mental problems also, just as too
    much causes them.

Selegiline protects against recognition memory impairment induced by
    neonatal iron treatment.

Excess of iron in the brain has been implicated in the pathogenesis of
several human neurodegenerative diseases, for example Alzheimer's
disease and Parkinson's disease. It has been shown that the neonatal
period is critical for the establishment of normal iron content in the
adult brain. Moreover, it is known that aging alters the cerebral
distribution of this metal. We have recently described that neonatal
administration of iron severely impaired novel object recognition
memory in rats. The aim of the present study was to determine whether
selegiline, a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor known for its
neuroprotective properties, could protect rats against cognitive
impairment induced by neonatal administration of iron. In the first
experiment, male Wistar rats received vehicle (5% sorbitol in water) or
iron (10.0 mg/kg) orally from postnatal days 12 to 14 and saline (0.9%
NaCl) or selegiline (1.0 or 10.0 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 21 days,
starting 24 h before the first iron dosing. In the second experiment,
rats were given either vehicle or iron (10.0 mg/kg) orally from
postnatal days 12 to 14 followed by saline or selegiline (1.0 or 10.0
mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 21 days, starting when rats reached
adulthood (50th day after birth). Iron-treated rats given selegiline in
both doses showed no deficits in recognition memory. Rats receiving
iron but no selegiline presented memory deficits. This is the first
study reporting the reversion of iron-induced memory impairment,
supporting the view that our model can be considered as a useful tool
in the search for new drugs with neuroprotective and/or memory
    enhancing properties.

  4. My reply was in the context of the larger picture of iron level and mental
disorders. If one limits oneself to an unrelated patchwork of individual
narrowly focused research studies this larger picture is lost. For all
nutritional substances, including iron, there is a minimal, an optimal,
and a max amount that relate to it's effects in human health. On the low
end mental problems result, as do they on the over max end; which was the
example the study posted shows. On balance, far more of the world's
population have too little which makes it the number one health problem
because of the mental health problems it causes in children that persist
    into aadulthood.

mentions cognition due to too little iron.

The web has many articles dealing with cognition or deafness

  12. intake of iron .. below .. what .. is NECESSARY .."

Easy, the natural experiment showing this is worldwid and easy to observe.
Where a mainly vegetarian diet with only a few items are eaten on an
ongo8ing basis the problem of low iron is the standard situation. This is
the root cause of low iron in children and women being the world's number
one health problem. If one eats a mainly vegetarian diet one must take
measures to be sure to include items with enough iron and in a form that
can be absorbed readily and isn't in conflict with other foods which
inhibit absorbtion. Diets high in milled grains are the main culpret
because they are cheap enough for people to afford, this is different from
problems from starvation, it's about eating too much os a few kinds of
    foods. .

  13. You can eat a vegetarian diet and get enough iron from plant sources;
I've been doing it for over 30 years.

And, to Ironhead's eternal chagrin, you can also get MS on such a diet.

Pork meat increases iron absorption from a 5-day fully controlled diet
when compared to a vegetarian diet with similar vitamin C and phytic
    acid content.

    Bach Kristensen M, Hels O, Morberg C, Marving J, Bugel S, Tetens I.

Department of Human Nutrition, Centre for Advanced Food Studies (LMC),
The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Frederiksberg,
    Denmark.

Meat increases absorption of non-haem iron in single-meal studies. The
aim of the present study was to investigate, over a 5 d period, the
potential increasing effect of consumption of pork meat in a whole diet
on the fractional absorption of non-haem iron and the total absorption
of iron, when compared to a vegetarian diet. A randomised cross-over
design with 3x5 d whole-diet periods with diets containing
Danish-produced meat, Polish-produced meat or a vegetarian diet was
conducted. Nineteen healthy female subjects completed the study. All
main meals in the meat diets contained 60 g of pork meat and all diets
had high phytic acid content (1250 mumol/d). All main meals were
extrinsically labelled with the radioactive isotope (59)Fe and
absorption of iron was measured in a whole body counter. The non-haem
iron absorption from the Danish meat diet was significantly higher
compared to the vegetarian diet (P=0.031). The mean fractional
    absorption of non-haem iron was 7.9 (se1.1), 6.8 (se 1.0) and 5.3 (se
0.6) % for the Danish and Polish meat diets and vegetarian diet,
respectively. Total absorption of iron was higher for both meat diets
compared to the vegetarian diet (Danish meat diet: P=0.006, Polish meat
diet: P=0.003). The absorption ratios of the present study were well in
accordance with absorption ratios estimated using algorithms on iron
bioavailability. Neither the meat diets nor the vegetarian diets
fulfilled the estimated daily requirements of absorbed iron in spite of
a meat intake of 180 g/d in the meat diets.

Good point Tom. Obviously from your conclusion we can also conclude that
eating 7oz of meat is safe, in your context. That, of accidental Iron
poisoning. Can we agree on that, or are you a moron?

To everyone else, cant you see how easy it is to destroy a delusional
psychotics delusions? Watch how he tries to skip and dance around the only
logical conclusion. That being his own study has shown 7oz of meat does NOT
provide enough iron to survive. So we should all strive to eat more than
7oz of meat a day. As Tom says we will not survive by eating less than 7oz
of meat. Do I have that right...? Yes, yes I think I do.
