  1. I was told over the phone by a bike store that they don't accept
returns on HRMs. Even tho they have a 30-day return policy that
doesn't exclude HRMs. They said that they can't accept it because if
it's been used I have sweated on it. I feel like I'm being shafted,
I've only used it twice and am returning it because I would rather
upgrade to a different model. Does anyone think it's unreasonable to
return it because of the above reason?

If it is the same brand, order the new model. Then pull the new chest
belt out of the box and include it with the one you are returning. That
way the next person gets a new chest belt. Ideally, the store you bought
the first one from would just send you the new unit minus the belt.

I don't know what the law is where you live, but if you've merely
changed your mind and the unit is not faulty, I think the store is being
    reasonable.

  4. Otherwise, how else can the store sell your stanked up heart rate strap as
    new?

    Because that's like returning a once-used toothbrush or once-worn
    underwear, a reasonable business policy.

What you've learned is that in return for local, personal service, you get a
[censored] return policy. Buy it at Nashbar or REI and you'd have no such
    problems (and a cheaper price).

So if I shop at "Nashbar or REI" I can be suspect of getting something used
    and unsanitary?
That's quite an endorsement you offer.

Nashbar, has a seperate "Returns" section, so you know that it may
    have been used.

For the OP, I can understand a LBS having a policy like that. I don't
think the manufacturer or distributor will take the HRM back, so the
shop would end up taking a loss. Small business' can't afford that.
Returning to upgrade should have been checked, before purchase.

It's unreasonable in my opinion, but the store policy is valid from a
public health standpoint. I always get itchy thinking about who wore
clothes in department stores before me.
    ;-)

I've had this same problem with a motorcycle helmet. The store gave
me a hard time so I sold it on eBay and went to their competition to
    buy one that was better.

Don't you wash the clothes before you wear it?

I can understand a helmet where the sweat soaks into the fabric. But a
HRM belt is hard plastic than can be easily washed.

Hell yeah! I'd wash any second hand piece of athletic gear too
(boxing gloves, heavy bags, focus mitts). If I buy a used car I clean
in top to bottem, inside and out.

Sure thing. A quick anti-bacterial scrib and it should be fine.
