  1. Well first of all this is my first post so I would like to say hello to all. I am new to the sport and am excited to get started training.

I would like to know everyone elses resting and average heartrates during a medium and long distance training ride.

Resting HR - between 60 and 67, but I have been of serious exercise for a little while though I am still in super shape.

Training HR - I like to keep it between 160 and 170

Thanks I just want to see where I stand and maybe get a grin from some of you in the 40's

  2. Hello and welcome to cycling! my avg hrt depends on the training session.the only time i avg a high hrt is in a race 149-151 for 3-4 hours. my rest hrt is 44. just some advice, it's not a good idea to always keep your hrt that high, go easy some days good luck.

  3. Yah, that 160 - 165 bpm HR is only for a short period of time, say 25 - 30 minutes and then let it drop down. I think that I would fall of the bike if I kept it at the level for a long ride.

Say I was going for a 2 hour ride on a smooth, level bike path. What HR should I shoot for?

Oh yah thank you for the welcome.

Firstly, you're supposed to mix up your intensity, so that you have hard days and easy days. You're not supposed to do more than three or four really hard rides a week.

On easy days, the idea is to simply get some blood pumping through your legs, so (this is only a rough guide) your HR should probably be around 110.

On hard days you might wanna mix up the intensity, but there's a gazillion different combinations, so it's pointless me giving you one of my routines.

You've gotta get to know your HR limmits (threshold) before anyone like me can be expected to suggest exact levels. After a while, you'll get a feel for what HR is that you can sustain before you feel as though you're going into a sprint.

Could you have sat on more than 165 for 10 or 15 minutes?

  5. dcast10101,

On July 6th I had a 3 hour ride where my AvgHR for the duration was 86% of my MaxHR. I took one short break (approx. 6 min.) after the first two hours, which is not included in the data below.

I'm 44 so I know a 17 year old could do this and probably go out for a long evening of drinking and debauchery, get about 3 hours of sleep and get up and do it all over again.

    Total AvgHR = 165 BPM (86.39% of MaxHR of 191) 02:58:36 (HRM)
    Lap1 AvgHR = 158 BPM (82.72% of MaxHR) 01:00:01
    Lap2 AvgHR = 167 BPM (87.43% of MaxHR) 00:58:33
    Lap3 AvgHR = 171 BPM (89.53% of MaxHR) 01:00:01

  6. Wow, such a great reply!

Allright, well I dont know about the drinking and debotchery(sp?) but the 3 hrs sleep for sure.

How would I find my max HR?

    Thx in advance

You might know this already, but rule of thumb is 220 - age in years. For you, this would be 220-17=203. Wow! Pretty high, eh? 85% of max HR would be about 173.

A true max HR would probably have to be done with the help of a doctor.

The 220 minus age formula (or any formula for that matter) is only a broad based guidline that you can use until you are fit and have been exercising for a while. Then you can go out and do your own stress test, such as a few 20 minute TT efforts followed by max effort up a nice long hill. That should give you a better idea of what your MaxHR actually is.

According to the 220 minus age formula, my MaxHR should be 176. However, I've had mine up to 191 doing just what I described above. The downside is that I've had to adjust my training zones upwards.

Don't do soemthing like that until you've been training for a while though as your heart will feel like it's going to explode!

FWIW, Doc, at 38 yrs, I could easily do that, too. No need to be 17! It's easy for me to get my HR up; the trick is in keeping it down!

    Agreed 100%!

Edit: But it sure is fun sometimes! 😄

    dcast, which province you in?

I just started cycling too - never hurts to have a few friends accross the country if ever one goes for the full ride 😉

oh ya, my resting HR is 53-60ish - but i've just started checking so that could be the anomalie, not the rule! As for a medium and long ride - i've never bothered checking.

good luck, hope you're loving it as much as i am!
