Most front hubs use a 9mm axle. I thought about doing what you're
suggesting using one of the Shimano XT 755/756 series front hubs that use a
10mm axle stepped down to 9mm on the ends. I assume that's what you're
planning in any case, as I don't think you'll find a 9mm axle long enough
for your use.

One other point is that these hubs use smaller bearings than a typical rear
hub: 10 x 3/16" rather than 9 x 1/4".

I don't have a strong opinion on whether or not your project is a good
idea. I was planning to go from 100mm to 120mm, but abandoned the scheme
when I got a good price on a Dura Ace track hub.

Thanks for the info.
I am currently using a rear wheel, which works ok (but is rather ugly,
with the freehub body on the left). I have the matching front wheel
sitting in the garage, so as soon as I have some time I will try, it
should cost nothing. I plan to swap the axle with the one of another
road rear hub.

I have never done something like this, so I could be missing something.
Anyway I will report the result of the operation.

Problem is going to be finding an axle long enough in the generally
smaller front axle sixe.

9 by1 or 9 by 26 fronts are shorter. If the front axle is a 3/8inch by
26, then it's easy since this is the same size as the rear.

Yes, you are correct!
If you have a 9mm axle that's 138mm long and a few spacers
you could make a standard 100mm front hub into a 130OLD hub
And, yes, it would then fit nicely in the back end of a
130mm bike.

So far so good.

I tried the operation and Peter C. were right, the axle on all the rear
wheels I tested have a bigger diameter than the front one.
