resin V brakes?

  1. I noticed a bike had its V brakes (not the brake levers) described as
    resin. Do these actually exist or is it just a typo? Can resin
    withstand the force of braking without problems? Is this a new cost
    cutting exercise or is it a good lightweight alternative to
    metal/alloy?

    Also why is it described as resin and not just plastic, whats the
    difference?

    They are probably resin coated steel.

    They're [censored] ... Brake levers have been using resin (Plastic) for a long
    while, and some Vee brakes now use resin with an in-fill plate of steel.
    They bend like any other plastic thing being asked to work towards it's
    limits. They're an abomination.

    They're [censored], really, really [censored]. They might be marginally better than
    teflon on steel rims on a wet day, but they're still [censored]. They're crapper
    than a [censored] thing being particularly [censored] on it's worstest, crappiest, [censored]
    day .. ever.

    Basically they're very, very cheap. I would never buy a bike with resin
    brakes .. 😉

    I would guess advertising "plastic brakes" might cause people to think
    they were [censored] (yes, really!). Resin, OTOH, is something that can
    vaguely be associated in some way with high tech composites, so might be
    confused in some way with "good".

    I suspect a Marketing Department is rearing its ugly head, in other words...

    I don't know but it depends on the design and shape as much as the
    material.

    Campagnolo describe their plastic brake levers as "composite", which also
    sounds less [censored] than "plastic", but they're actually fine and don't flex
    in use any more than aluminium ones. Campag's plastic is *nice* plastic!
    The actual calipers or brake arms is different, though. You want as much
    rigidity and reliability as you can get there.

    Plastics often have other stuff in them (filler, it's cheaper than the
    plastic) which means they can legitimately be called composite. Is the
    campag stuff fibreglass?

    (agreed about them working - my mirage levers have no problems at all)

    There's plastic and there's Plastic, though. I'd be inclined to trust
    Campag's take on plastic for bicycle brakes more than, say, Airfix's...

    Dunno. I suppose it could be glass fibre reinforced nylon with the Mirage
    and Xenon models, or "carbon composite" or just a more humble plastic?

    Record's are also described as "composite" but that's genuine carbon
    fibre, AFAIK.

    That's rosin, though rosin is a resin since it is obtained from tree sap.
    My favourite resin-based product is Retsina. Nothing to do with cycling.
    Though an anagram of retsina is trains which is, a bit. RETSINA is also an
    almost perfect Scrabble rack as it combines well with most other letters
    to give an eight letter word. I think I need a drink. (I was meant to be
    going cycling this evening but it really is chucking it down here so I
    will have that drink.)

    It doesn't mean much as a word without a bit of extra context.

    composites are usually made of fabric (such as carbon or glass fibre),
    sometimes enclosing a core material (balsa, nomex, airex), in a resin
    matrix, where the resin is usually polyester or epoxy and may be mixed
    with microfibres to add strength, colloidal silica to add viscosity, or
    glass microballoons for lightness. So it's perfectly accurate to call
    any carbon fibre component a resin component. Obviously, a resin
    component isn't necessarily a carbon fibre component; the reinforcement
    may be glass fibre or polyester, or possibly other things.

    Composites can certainly be a good lightweight alternative to metal,
    although of course it depends on the composite. And something described
    as 'resin', while it's probably composite (certainly in this
    application), may simply be just resin with no reinforcement.

    Plastic describes a material which can be shaped; but when we use
    'plastic' in common parlance we're typically talking about
    thermoplastic - materials which can be shaped when heated. Many resins
    are set with a catalyst and can't be resoftened by heating - or if they
    can be they can't subsequently be reused.

    But fundamentally, would you buy brakes made of 'plastic'? 'Resin'
    sounds so much more technical.

    I wouldn't be so categorical. Some composites have much better strength
    to weight characteristics than any metal. Sooner or later the best
    brakes will probably have composite callipers. However, I would only
    buy 'resin' or 'composite' brakes from a known and reputable maker.

    I agree, but I _seriously_ doubt composite brakes are what we're discussing
    ... you'll note the OP stated 'resin' not 'composite' ... Strength to weight
    ratio matters for nothing if the strength is in the wrong plane, and can't
    take the bending forces that a normal cycle brake can exert. Which is one
    reason why resin brakes are, categorically, [censored].
