Ieri e' morto il capostipite.
Il padre di Michele, Pietro, Brunello e Ivano, nonno della compianta

Stamani avevo giusto tirato fuori una mia Fanini rossa (ne ho due) e
quando sono arrivato li' ai cancelli li ho trovati inspiegabilmente
tutti chiusi.
Sono andato a casa di Michele a presentargli le condoglianze; non gli e'
sfuggito che quel telaio l'aveva fatto suo padre, uno degli ultimi ancora
in circolazione.

Una volta, l'anno scorso, ero li' in bottega con quella bici e c'era anche
il Vecio, in carrozzella alla quale da tempo era relegato.

Michele glie la indico':
'Vedi, Babbo, questa l'avevi fatta tu!.'
Il Vecchio pianse, come un fanciullo.

Lunedi' ci pedalero' allo Stelvio.

Yesterday e' died the prototype. The father of Michele, Peter, Brunello

The founder of the Fanini bike factory, and sponsor of so much cycling
activity, for so long, did pass away.

He was father to the four sons, all so involved in professional
cycling, both men's and women's, and grandfather to the late Michela
Fanini.
I happen to be a friend, much better than a customer, of Michele Fanini,
the one son running the bike shop in Segromigno in Piano, just outside
of Lucca.

The Faninis have been mentors to a great number of distinguished atletes,
such as Chioccioli, Sorensen, Tafi, Bartoli, Cipollini, Stahurskaya.

The old man used to visit his former shop from time to time, on his
wheelchair, and was so touched that he weeped like a child that time he
saw me ride an old bike he had made with his hands.

This monday I'll ride that bike over the Passo dello Stelvio, trying to
honor Him in the best possible manner.

Hopefully you made the ride in a grand style. There are few Fanini's in the
USA but I have seen some.

I did it, the day before yesterday.
Actually, only from Gomagoi to Albergo Sottostelvio (Franzenhohe) where I
was to meet a friend who never showed up.
From Trafoi up I met only another fellow cyclist, and a few mountain
skiers descending from the glaciers.

The Passo dello Stelvio is still officially closed, but not for long.
This year there is so much snow on the Alps that it is just magic to ride
so early, before the grand opening.
