  1. I have done some extensive searching and found very little useful information regarding colon
cleansing. Most of what I've found are sites trying to sell a certain kit.

Can anyone recommend a brand or program for colon cleansing? I am not interested in colonics - yet.
I am simply looking for an herbal cleansing kit - and information regarding when I should take the
supplements (with or without food?), what I can expect (especially in the way it might impact my
running), and if I should take any additional supplements to counter any minerals/nutrients lost
    during the cleansing.

I recently bought Triple Cleanse from GNC. However, there was *very* little documentation - just a
few paragraphs on the box itself and no instructions inside.

I've also seen that some people are aggressively and irrationally against colon cleansing (almost to
the point of it being a personal crusade). If you're one of those people, please move on to the next
thread - I do not want my thread to become your personal battleground.

Perhaps you could explain why you would want to use a colon cleanse. Could you provide evidence that
colon cleanses do more good than harm and are worth the cost. There are also those who one might say
are irrationally in *favor* of colon cleanses to the point of it being a personal crusade.

I remain open minded about colon cleanses. I am skeptical that they are helpful due to the fact that
the colon is self cleansing and the lack of objective evidence that the cleanses actually work to
get rid of toxins as they claim. But if you can provide documentation that they actually do what
they claim I would be interested.

You will often find that people who are marketing various colon cleanses make certain specific
claims about what the cleanses do. I question whether these claims are anything more than marketing
hype. For example, it is claimed that they remove toxins. Have specific toxins been measured before
and after colon cleanses to demonstrate the validity of this assertion?

You want colon cleansing, but without colonics? Isn't that like wanting a pill that will give you
the benefits of exercising without actually doing any exercising? What you ask for makes no sense --
except from a marketing point of view. There's lots of companies that will eagerly sell you "fat
burner" pills, and as you've discovered there are companies that will sell you "colon cleansing"
    supplements.

If you want to do research, why not start with the original literature on colon cleansing? The big
advocate for it in the U.S. was J. H. Kellogg, superintendent and staff physician of the Battle
    Creek Sanitarium.

Early in his career, he visited Africa and studied the habits of gorillas. From his observations of
what he believed to be our closest relatives, he concluded that people were not having bowel
movements nearly so often as they needed for good health. This lead to his advocacy of colonics.

Kellogg also was an advocate of vegetarianism (both for health reasons and because of his Seventh-
Day Adventist background) and other dietary practices, such as the avoidance of spicy foods.

Here are some biographies of J. H. Kellogg:

The Bowel Program [As in "The Cure For All Cancers", 1998 edition]

Bacteria are always at the root of bowel problems, such as pain, bloating and gassiness. They can
not be killed by zapping, because the high frequency current does not penetrate the bowel contents.

Although most bowel bacteria are beneficial, the ones that are not, like Salmonella, Shigella, and
Clostridiums are extremely detrimental because they have the ability to invade the rest of your body
and colonize a trauma site or tumorous organ. These same bacteria colonize a can-cer tumor and
prevent shrinking after the malignancy is stopped.

One reason bowel bacteria are so hard to eradicate is that we are constantly reinfecting our-selves
by keeping a reservoir on our hands and under our fingernails. So the first thing to do is improve
sanitation. Use 50% grain alcohol in a spray bottle at the bathroom sink. Sterilize your hands after
bathroom use and before meals. Second, use betaine hydrochloride to kill Clostridium bacteria (2
tablets 3 times a day). Third, use turmeric (2 capsules 3 times a day, this is the common spice)
which I find helps against Shigella, as well as E. coli. Expect orange colored stool.

Fourth, use fennel (2 capsules 3 times a day). Fifth, use digestive enzyme tablets with meals as
directed on the bottle. (But only as long as necessary, because these frequently harbor molds.)
Sixth, use a single 2 tsp. Dose of Black Walnut Hull Tincture Extra Strength. Add it to ½ glass of
water or fruit juice and sip over a fifteen minute period. Stay seated until any side effect from
the alcohol wears off. Seventh, if you are constipated, take Cascara Sagrada (an herb, start with
one capsule a day, use up to maximum on the label, extra magnesium (300mg magnesium oxide, 2 or 3 a
day), and drink a cup of hot water upon rising in the morning. This will begin to regu-late your
elimination. Eight, take Lugol's solution, 6 drops in ½ cup of water 4 times a day. This is
    specifically for Salmonella.

It can take all eight to get rid of a bad bacteria problem in a week. Afterward, you must con-tinue
to eat only sterile dairy products. Note that the Kidney Cleanse is often effective with bowel
    problems. Try it also.

You will know you succeeded when your tummy is flat, there is not a single gurgle, and your
    mood improves.

The American Medical Association has not carried out one study on the effectiveness of colon
cleansing as a therapy. Not one. There is an extraordinary reluctance on the part of the AMA to
investigate alternative therapies - why? Because they don't want to find a cure. And why is that?
Because serious illnesses are a multi-trillion dollar industry and finding an effective remedy will
wipe out a lucrative market. It makes much more economic sense to sell therapies to patients that
don't work (eg chemotherapy which most doctors ADMIT won't cure cancer in 95% of cases).

[censored]. Firstly, there is NCAAM which makes taxpayer money available to those who wish to carry
out studies of their alternative therapies. Thus, when studies are not carried out, it is logically
permissible to infer that those who are making the claims are afraid of the results.

Jan is apparently disappointed that the post on colonic irrigation didn't provoke enough reaction
for her to vent some good old alt.med spleen on.

Here you go Jan! A response to the above.

Go and learn some medical history!!. The mainstream invented colonic irrigation. Purgation and
enemas were are huge component of Western medicine from the time of Hippocrates and before, until
colonic physiology and the pathology and real causation of many illnesses that were supposedly due
to bowel dysfunction began to be understood.

Early last century colectomy was even quite popular for vague illnesses such as neurasthenia because
of supposed colonic autointoxication. I have mentioned here before a surgeon by the name of
Arbuthnot Lane who was reputed to have removed enough colons to stretch from London to Liverpool!

Colonic cleansers can't even do it right. We surgeons previously used irrigation as a means of
clearing faeces out of the colon before operation, but it is a very inefficient way of cleaning out
the colon, especially in anyone who actually has a tendency to constipation and thus might according
to alt.med theory be more in need of it. And that is with experienced and well-trained nurses, a
standard of attention and safety that you will not find readily within AM. We now use methods that
actually do mostly give a completely clean bowel but they are not suitable for regular use.

There is absolutely no body of evidence supporting this practice.
