news.individual.net costs 10 Euro a year (text-only service). It's
pretty well filtered against spam and sporge.

yup the differnce from what the german server shows and google does on
some groups can be quite astounding.

I filter by the subject line having "M" AND "I" AND "5" AND "tion",
which gets rid of virtually all of them. It might get rid of a few
genuines as well, but I don't care!

(Just got back to work, and none of these posts have appeared using the
PlusNet news servers. Interesting, considering the amount of spam they
let through by email!)

Well some clue. But it's a pain having to keep fiddling. And sometimes
I'm out, use Google Groups and therefore have no way to filter.

Just had a look on a few Thunderbird sites. It seems that cross post
and any regex filtering is not supported (yet). Which is a shame.

However it seems you can use Newsproxy with Thundebird. Newsproxy is
a, guess what, proxy that sites between your news client (Thunderbird
in your case, FreeAgent in mine) and your news server. It's
freeware, but no longer supported. Cross post filtering is done by
counting the colons in the Xref line. Like this:

uk.rec.cycling drop xref:*:*:*:*

As the Xref line is in the overview of the news article, it means the
rule gets implemented without having to download the article itself.

Ah - thanks for that. Thunderbird certainly seems to work with
NewsProxy, so I'll see what happens!
