Has anyone got ideas of what is best to do here. I have a 12 year old mountain bike which is great in every way except that I keep getting punctures in the rear tyre in exactly the same place. I think I know the problem. The thin inner black lining that goes between the metal wheel and the inner tube is prone to sliding slightly over the miles so that the whole where the inner tube valve goes through and up through the wheel keeps moving and so comes out of alignment with the wheel whole.
This forces the inner tube to come out at a bad angle and eventually over a the miles the sharp metal edge of the hole of the wheel cuts and punctures the inner tube either on the valve section or around its base area.
I've tried everything. Pushing the valve back straight. Making slits in the black lining so that it doesn't push the valve but no success. Now I've just had another puncture and am well and totally annoyed with the whole thing.
Any suggestions before I throw the whole stupid thing in the skip :-)

Your local bike shop should sell cloth rim tape ("Velox" brand) which sticks firmly to the wheel and doesn't stretch or bulge, in place of the slidy rubber thing you have at the moment. It's a huge improvement. If the problem is what you think it is, this will stop it.

Well done. It's time to do something about it. Replace the rim tape.
What pressures are you running in your back wheel ? Maybe its a bit too low - when you brake the friction between your back tyre and the ground cause the tyre and tube to 'creep' round.
A few more PSI might help fix it. or stop using the back brake ? ;-)

Thanks to everyone who replied earlier. It is actually the front wheel where there is a problem. Anyway on friday night I did replace the inner black lining and the guy in the shop recommended I get a better pump too, even though I bought my existing one from there:-)
Took the bike for a 20 mile ride on saturday morning and the valve is still still sticking straight up. The extra tyre pressure also helped take 6 minutes of my journey time!!
