Not sensibly. There is Felixstowe-Bawdsey ferry (if it still exists), but
that is a long way out of your way. I used to exist at Leiston and would
sometimes go home through the forest from Ipswich. Once off the A12 and
through Melton it's not too bad, except during the Snape Festival!!

go a little higher and aim for Ufford, then over to Bromeswell or Eyke
to then cut across to the forest.

Come and ride the Suffolk CTC Rough Stuff 25 in October, along with 100+
others. This year there may be an optional extra 5 mile section

Through Ipswich (cant avoid that bit 🙂 ) to Henley Rd or Westerfield
Rd, then north to the B1078. Turn right & follow to the roundabout
crossing the A12, straight across into Woodbridge, out the far side of
Woodbridge and onwards.

Grab a map and vary the route by all means, but avoiding traffic mainly
means not following the A12.

Mate of mine takes risks with everything (IMHO) & always gets away with
it, until he managed to fall off cycling at 8mph along a Rendlesham fire
break and crack his spine. Paramedics said another 50 yards into the
woods & they wouldve helicoptered him out. Shouldve carried him. 🙂

foot ferry at the mouth of the Deben. Takes bikes. Track the coast
through Felixstowe, then all the way through the golf course to it. The
Ferry Cafe (not to be confused with the Ferry Inn family-sized pub) does
a great mug of tea & fish & chips.

Lots of nice lanes between Ipswich & Woodbridge.
If I'm on a mission then I head out Tuddenham, Gt.Bealings and back
Lt.Bealings, Playford Heath.

You can put your bike on the train for £1 eg to Campsea Ash and do
Tunstall forest. (About which I know nothing.)

Thanks for all your replies!

Unfortunately avoiding Ipswich is not an option as I happen to live and work
there now (cycling-wise its a big improvement on Reading though!) but
whenever I go out for a ride I always seem to end up nearly ending up on the
A12 and then doubling back through some god-forsaken suburban estate to
avoid it so the routes "out of town" are useful 🙂

Starting to find some really good countryside etc on my travels 🙂

why not come out with the Suffolk CTC on a Sunday. We'll show you
plenty of different routes out of Ipswich to the various destinations.
