I've never seen this damage the hub though - the chain would literally
have to eat through the outside spokes on the hub's right flange to
even reach the hub. I'm finding it hard to imagine riding a bike with
the chain wedged between the cassette and hub THAT far...

I did have a "wheel-shattering experience" in the middle of a 24-hour
race though - overshifted in some nasty rocks, and popped one of the
thin (1.8/1.5mm) spokes. Fixed it before my next middle of the night
lap, and took off. By the time I was halfway through the lap, I had
lost SIX drive side spokes, and (to say the least) the rest of the lap
was "interesting". Still, the wheel got me to the line without losing
much time at all (though it required doing so without ANY rear brake,
which made for some memorable descents).

Your chain plate broke off AND you trashed the hub? How much did you
torque down on that thing? You must have some serious power in dem legs!

The worst I've had was having the chain wedge between the spokes &
cassette, and screw up some spokes. That's when I decided to always use
the guards, even though everyone says they're not needed. Derailleurs DO
get bent, after all.
