  1. Could you all answer a couple questions about the dynamics of the
pack in a stage race? I have read that the reigning tdf GC
champion is the boss of the peleton. How does he exercise power?
Does he have patronage to dispense? I read once that when Hinault
was champion, and someone in the peleton acted up, he would lead
out a fierce pace until the rider's tails were dragging so as to
regain control. Does Armstrong exercise control? I know that last
year a dust up with Simoni made the news, and Simoni came out
second best. That would make it more difficult for S to place
    well. No?

    Thank you.

I don't understand this. I share the frustration that comes this time of
year when morons show up and try to dazzle rbr with their "expertise." I
don't understand why, when someone apparently new to the sport, asks a
legitimate question in this group where they have every right to expect we
    will know the answer.

If you want to know what's really wrong with cycling ... at least in America
.... a large part of the problem is all the arrogant [censored] in the sport who
think it's beneath them to answer a simple question from a newbie.

    Michael,

Armstrong can exert his influence in a number of ways. If he approves of
the riders who are in a break up the road ... if they're no threat to him on
GC ... then he and the team may let them go. If they are a threat, he can
send some of his teammates to chase it down. If the race is going through
the hometown of a rider in the peloton, that rider will sometimes ask the
Patron for "permission" to break ahead and be first into that town. Yes,
the riders in the peloton kiss Armstrong's ring ... figuratively. More
    literally, they kiss his ass.

It wasn't Simoni with whom Lance had the incident last year. I was Simeoni.
Close spelling, but not the same. That was a really stupid incident on
Lance's part and he'll be dealing with the consequences in lawyer fees and
such for some time to come. Simeoni got into a break. Lance didn't want
Simeoni to have any kind of good results because of insinuations Simeoni
made in court against Dr. Ferrari whom Armstrong works with. So Lance
personally chased down Simeoni and told everyone in the break that, either
they convince Simeoni to leave the break and go back to the peloton, or the
break is over. Simeoni returned to the peloton with Lance and the break
went on. That's the kind of power the patron has, but that's an unfortunate
example of it being weilded in an irresponsible manner.

I'm still convinced it wasn't because Simeoni testified against a friend
of LANCE--I think LANCE is too narcissistic to be [censored] about that. I
think it was because Simeoni filed a lawsuit against LANCE himself.
    That'd get his attention.

I recently read Lance carries a Blackberry with him all the time, and has a
messaging service that immediately sends him any news item mentioning his
    name. He reads them immediately.

I GUESS WE HATERS JUST DONT GET IT !!!!!!!!

  8. It is not so much the reigning TdF champ, but the race leader and the
top GC contenders as well. And they are not dispensing patronage -
they are demanding respect and honor for their position, especially for
    the leader's jersey.

The unwritten rules are: if the race leader wants to pee, the peloton
will pee as well or ride tempo until the leader returns. No attacks.
If the race leader or GC contenders have a mechanical or crash, they
peloton will give them a chance to rejoin if possible. If a rider
wants to go up the road to visit hometown friends/family, they will ask
permission from the team controlling the race so the pack will not
    chase them down.

This is all a simple matter of respect and courtesy. If you do not
follow the rules, most of the peloton will shun you and make life
difficult. They will leave you out in the wind, "flick" you to the
back, gap you out.... You need to have friends in the pack, and the
way to make friends is to show respect to get respect.

You probably will not notice these things in a race. When the critical
points of the race arrive, everyone will attack the race leader with
    everything they have.

  9. So what I don't understand is in the first paragraph you say that the
part of the rules of the "Patron" is to allow some break to go up the
road, and some to not at his choosing.

Then in the second you say Lance is stupid for doing what you said he
was essentially entitled to do. Simeoni Attacked Lance jumped
immediatly on his wheel expecting the attack to be nullified. except
the other teams were sleeping. It isn't like he sat and thought about
it. It was a slit second decision that got compounded, ironically if he
had truely been calculatatingly about it and put Postal on the front to
nulify the chase no one would have been the wiser.

I don't know about you but if a guy who was sueing me for calling him a
liar(which he factually is) and who has a history of using his wins
and the press time to make stupid statements like everyone in the
peleton is on drugs excet for him or walking his bike across the finish
line. I wouldn't let him win either.

Note on Simeoni being a liar: It is a fact of Simeonis case that
Simeoni changed his testimony during the his trial (some say to get a
lienent sentance). The fact that those two stories are fundementally
different makes one of them a lie. Simeoni have been the one to spoke
them makes him, factually, a liar.

  10. which he chagned, at least once. Not that I think Ferrari is innocent.
Just that i think Simeoni is slime. Same as those 35 year olds that
still blame their parents for being losers. Can't take responsibilty
    for their own actions.

that's what you call "slime"? and here i'd been calling it "immature", i
reserve slime for something like this (this happened on my favorite
    running route, btw)

"Robb was found early Sunday evening shot to death in his car, its
emergency lights flashing, parked on the railroad tracks that parallel
Seattle's West Marginal Way just west of the Duwamish Waterway. He died
of a gunshot to the head.

King County Deputy Prosecutor Mary Barbosa said it was possible that
Robb had pulled over to help someone when he was killed, but
    investigators just don't know.

"That would be so Mike Robb," James said. "And so he pays the ultimate
price. I tell you, it is a sad situation if that's the case."

Police arrested the suspect Monday when, acting on a tip, they found him
on a barge in the Duwamish not far from the shooting scene.

The teen had changed out of wet clothes and into some he'd found on the
    barge, a police report said.

Police said the teen recently commented to his parents and siblings that
he was going to kill someone, and they were "extremely fearful of him
    regarding their safety."

Barbosa said there didn't appear to be any connection between the teen
    and Robb.

No patronage to dispense in 2005 either.
Also, Simoni is NOT starting the Tour, as for Simeoni-- who cares?

THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE WALSH'S BOOK HASN'T BEEN PUBLISHED IN ITALIAN.
THE JUDGE HASN'T READ THE BOOK. HE DOESN'T KNOW THE TRUTH.

I'm quite sure that Armstrong knew perfectly well about both

that would be visible to the world.

    def. of a newbie.

    But more to the point:

    1. If you think the reaction people get in RBR has anything to do with
the state of cycling in general or bike racing specifically you're
    delusional.

    2. I'm an arrogant [censored] sometimes for sure, but my comment on July
