Why not just use a regular propane torch? Those special kitchen bottles are quite expensive, as is the fuel in the smaller bottles. The hardware models and gas bottles are much cheaper, and you can use them for plumbing, killing weeds in the patio and sidewalk, and I found it handy for dealing with Japanese beetles, which have been a plague here for the last two summers.
hmm. i thought the kitchen models were smaller and thus cheaper.
Do they come in really large sizes for the kitchen? I want a big one so I can intimidate unwanted dinner guests.

With the disclaimer that prices vary from place to place, I did a little surfing. Canadian Tire sells a cheap set, just a torch and bottle c/w bottle of propane for $16.99, or the same with some extra attachments for $19.99, and a self igniting set c/w propane for $29.99. The propane bottles included are the 400 gram size.
Most of the creme brulee torches were $25 up.
I have to admit that I am not up to date on all the local prices. I remember my wife wanting one years ago and I was astounded at the prices for the little guys. My regular propane torch sets works fine for the rare caramelizing that we do, but one of the small ones would not do what I need it do around the rest of the house.
i haven't done any pricing either. could give me an excuse to go [censored] around at the hardware store.
