Since you obviously didn't see the other thread on this
subject that's been going, I'll re-post my reply.

In the article, the winner says he wanted to prove the
relative efficiency of his recumbent vs. conventional bikes.
Of course, he picks the flattest stretch of road on the
planet. Lets see how its efficiency stands up at, say, the
Assault on Mt. Mitchell or the Six Gap Century or some event
like that. He didn't prove anything we didn't know.
Recumbents can go fast on the flat. Duh.

Based on the statement made by the second place
finisher,(the recumbent could not climb or sprint good) he
should have out sprinted him at the finish. Maybe the
recumbent sprinted better than he stated "JTN"

Recumbants can get up to and hold a high speed that makes it
difficult to come around. There is also very little draft
effect to use in passing. You're comparing Apples and
Oranges. Let us know when a recumbant sets the absolute
cycling record going up Mt. Washington or Mt. Evans.

Recumbents can go fast on the flat. Duh.

This experiment has been run. Long time RBR hacks remember
Eric House's 'bent experience.

Eric was an ultra-marathoner and used to hold the course
record for the Furnace Creek 508. If I remember it correctly
he bought a 'bent after a crash in which he broke his
collarbone, in order to not disrupt his training.

He then rode the recumbent in the Furnace Creek race, a
race in which at the time he held the upright record at 29
hours. On the 'bent he established a course record that
stood until last year at 35 hours. The race has over 35000
ft of climbing. The difference in his times was almost
exactly 6 hours.

Ted,

I think JTN could be right. Without taking anything away
from him, it had to benefit John that the main group got
peeled off with a bad turn before the finish. John was
doing a solo effort, and a pod drafting in a group and
using strategy would have the advantage, all other factors
being equal.

There's pretty slim pickings available if the plan is to go
out and beat upright racers with a bent at an organized
event. Them's the rule's, no debate needed.. So we are
looking a racing only at the citizen level.

Sounds like they were all taking it seriously and trying to
prevail. The average speeds seems to be in the typical road
race range.

Bike Across Florida 2004

The second edition of Bike Across Florida, a 167 mile road
race, will be held on April 18, 2004 and start in the ocean
resort town of Cocoa Beach. The course will wind through the
outskirts of Orlando and finish in downtown Crystal River.
The event, dubbed BAF 2004, will commence with an official-
send off from Mr. Beeles, the mayor of Cocoa Beach, marching

Last year's male winner Bill Blancher and female winner Lisa
Blixt will be defending their yellow jersey. It will be the

coming from Florida I can attest that the "rides" down there
are faster than all races except the state champs. other
than that the rides far outpace the races in the past.
