Record stage wins in one tour?

Merckx won eight stages twice. I am not sure if that is the record or not, but it is at least close.

Merckx holds the record for most stage wins in one Tour (8) and the most stage wins overall (34) - he is also the only rider to win all 3 Jerseys (and at his first attempt), and holds the record for most days in Yellow (111)

Not bad for a rider who only entered 7 TdFs

In 1977 Vuelta a Espana the great Freddy Maertens won 14 stages (out of 16) - a record for any tour i believe.

Needless to say Freddy had a little help from the pharmaceutical gods that year. 🙂

Imagine if he'd ridden now in this era of undetectable doping! Nearly all of Fuentes' boys tested repeatedly negative. Nearly all of Ferrari's boys ditto.
