Recommendations for upper body protection ??

BTDT! I use Fox 911 elbow guards. Last years version works very well.

probably want the hard shell protection. If you have metal pins and screws in your elbow a neoprene
wrap will keep the joint warm and loose. I did feel quite a bit of soreness after riding because of
the irritation from the metal especially if it was cold and damp out. I had the pins and wire
removed after a couple of years and now my elbow is just as good as before.

Geez how did you 'total' a mtb?!!! Story? Pics?

I use the same ones, they have helped to retain the skin on my elbows and forearms quite well.

Let me see, while waiting for my Sugar 3+ frame to come back from warrantee (second Cracked Sugar
frame for me) I spyed a beautiful Specialized Enduro on Clearance for a touch ouver $1,300. I have
been thouroughly enjoying my new ride for the last few weeks until last Sunday I went for a great
ride up in the Auburn Area (Manzanita-Stagecoach-FloodTrail-Clementine-OHV Park-Stagecoach)

Doing a nasty DH in the OHV park I crashed while going on an even nastier drop, nice transition
though so when I lost it I just got a ugly looking 3" gash and some trail rash on my right leg. Bike
was fine and I was able to ride back with the injury. Ouch... but not a catastrophe.

When I got to the car I chucked my bike on the roof to get it out of the way so I could clean up my
injury and off we went. In my haste I had forgotten to clamp down the tire straps (bike mounts with
both wheels on). DON'T DO THIS. I have discovered that not straping the tires can result in rapid
separation of the bike from the motor vehicle... NOT GOOD.

We heard a loud thumping and when I looked in my rear view mirror my bike was in the lane behind me
[censored] and other unprintables. Fortunately for me noone was following closely so it didn't get creamed
right away. After a couple of very close calls (my bike nearly became a hood ornament on a Greyhound
Bus) I sprinted out during a break in traffic and retreived my (3 WEEK OLD) bike.

Amazingly enough the bike wasn't totalled, it looks like the seat took the brunt of the impact, and
then the handlebars. My right from brake hydralic reservoir cap was sheared off and everything on
the handlbars is pretty much ground down. The bike shop said it should cost less than $100 to fix my
almost NEW bike. Not totalled but it could have easily been.

I guess this is proof that God has a special sort of mercy for people who do (occasional)
stupid things.

Although the Dianese Shuttle Suit is a pretty sweet setup, you'll have to sell your left lung to
afford it.

661 makes a comparable jacket that won't break the bank - it was a third of the cost of the Dianese
when I bought mine. It's got ballistic nylon-covered plastic forearms, hard plastic elbow and
shoulder cups, chest plates, and a whole whack of thick padding over important bits (chest, back,
kidneys, etc). The piece de resistance, however, is the design of the plastic spinal discs...they
overlap enough to provide complete coverage, but they're independent of one another, so they'll
pivot, twist and flex as you move.

The only downside is that It's not going to breathe as much as a t-shirt, but it's got enough
ventilation to keep you from keeling over from heat stroke.
