Thanks to others for the recommendation of AW Cyles, and thanks for
mentioning those bikes Simon. The Nemesis was already on the short
list I was preparing, but I included the others as they looked good
too. The Neutron is particularly interesting, essentially the same as
the Nem, but with a 700c wheel set up and a shimano front dynamo hub
and fixed lamp thrown in. A potentially excellent off the shelf bike
for commuting.
He did go to AW Cycles, and bought a Nemesis, which he's excited
about. They sent him off for a test ride which I think was good. He
hasn't had a chance yet to ride it properly, he's picking the bike up
Friday to give them chance to fit the mudguards, rack etc.
One thing I was a bit surprised and disappointed about though was the
fact that they sold him a Met 5 helmet for (cough!) £80.
Fair enough, they're in the business of selling bikes and extras at
time of purchase seems very sensible, no problem there. If the man
wants to wear a helmet while riding that's his choice, again, no
problem. It seems a bit poor though to sell a new cyclist, who's
buying a bike simply to commute 5 miles back and forth to work, a top
of the line, flash harry helmet for 80 quid. Bit OTT.
They also flogged him a pair of Altura touring panniers for £70. Nice
gear, but not really needed for a short working commute. A single
pannier would have been quite sufficient.
Of course, I wasn't there so I shouldn't be too judgmental, this fella
can be very enthusiastic and he's a grown man, so maybe he should have
shown a bit more discipline. I can't help feeling though they took
advantage at least a little bit.
Anyway, he's now got a nice bike and some nice kit to go with it, and
that should give him a good chance of really enjoying his new commute.
