  1. Got the following recipe from Penzey's:

    Hello Dolly Bars

Prep Time: 10 minutes Baking Time: 20-25 minutes Yield: 3 dozen

½ C. butter, melted 1½ C. graham cracker crumbs 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 C. chopped nuts (walnuts or
pecans are great) 1 C. chocolate chips 1-1/3 C. shredded coconut 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk 1
    tsp. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350° F. Mix butter, graham gracker crumbs, and cinnamon until well blended. Press
mixture into bottom of an ungreased 9" X 13" baking dish to form a thin crust. Layer with nuts,
chocolate chips, then coconut. In a small bowl, mix condensed milk with vanilla. Pour evenly over
top of bars; bake for 20-25 minutes, until lightly golden.

I made these twice over the holidays, to rave reviews. Then a friend told me his aunt makes a
similar item (called "Magic Bars"😉, and my recipe was missing something. Anyone have an idea of what
that might be (he didn't know). And yes, I could Google "Magic Bars", but I'd much rather get a
    personal RFC opinion, if possible.

    Many thanks in advance... :-)

There's no cinnamon or vanilla in the ones I make, but here is the "Magic Cookie Bars" recipe I have
used for many years, which one of my sons devours an entire batch of each Christmas while he drives
just his two hours home...gack! It's from the back of the milk can:

    Magic Cookie Bars
1/2 cup margarine or butter 1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 (1oz.) can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT evaporated milk) 1 cup (6 oz.) semi-sweet
chocolate chips 1 (3-1/2 oz.) can flaked coconut (1-1/3 cups) 1 cup chopped walnuts Preheat
oven to 350 degrees (325 for glass dish). In 9x13" baking dish, melt margarine/butter in oven.
Sprinkle crumbs over margarine/butter; pour Eagle Brand evenly over crumbs. Top with remaining
ingredients; press down firmly. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool. Chill if
desired. Cut into bars. Store loosely covered at room temperature. (Makes 24 to 36 bars.)

  3. Magic bars are a variety of different bars usually using sweetened condensed milk.

Got the following recipe from Penzey's:

    Hello Dolly Bars

Prep Time: 10 minutes Baking Time: 20-25 minutes Yield: 3 dozen

½ C. butter, melted 1½ C. graham cracker crumbs 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 C. chopped nuts (walnuts
or pecans are great) 1 C. chocolate chips 1-1/3 C. shredded coconut 14 oz. sweetened condensed
    milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Anyone have an idea of
what that might be (he didn't know). And yes, I could Google "Magic Bars", but I'd much rather get
a personal RFC opinion, if possible.

    Many thanks in advance... :-)

    Many thanks in advance... :-)

There's a thousand different recipes and names for this concoction--one recipe I have calls for
butterscotch chips along with the chocolate chips. Give it a try next time... Amy

Got the following recipe from Penzey's:

    Hello Dolly Bars

Prep Time: 10 minutes Baking Time: 20-25 minutes Yield: 3 dozen

½ C. butter, melted 1½ C. graham cracker crumbs 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 C. chopped nuts (walnuts
or pecans are great) 1 C. chocolate chips 1-1/3 C. shredded coconut 14 oz. sweetened condensed
    milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Anyone have an idea of
what that might be (he didn't know). And yes, I could Google "Magic Bars", but I'd much rather get
a personal RFC opinion, if possible.

    Many thanks in advance... :-)

I've been making these since 1966.
    1. I've never seen these made with cinnamon or vanilla altho it's not surprising, with the recipe
    coming from Penzey's.

    2. The original recipe had butterscotch chips in addition to the chocolate ones.

Add me to the list that is surprised about the vanilla and cinnamon. Remove those two ingredients
and it looks just like the squares that I have made many times. I find they are tastier after they
    have been cooled=

So I see! I guess mine aren't *missing* anything then, unless one compares it to a
    particular recipe.

Is there a big difference between canned coconut and the stuff in a bag?

I make 'em like Dimitri BUT (always the BUT!) I pour the sweetened condensed milk over the top as
the last layer. Makes 'em chewier. Lynn from Fargo

Heh, I had the same thought. I'm going to try them without the cinnamon, next time.
