Hi Peete Welcome to the wacky world of diabetes. I say that
because a term you will learn quickly here is YMMV - your
mileage may vary. There are very few "absolutely" right
statements that can be made about this disease. There are
some - like BGs out of whack can kill you - but not many.
I'll interleave comments in this case, because of your long
intro. I was where you are only two years ago.

Sorry that this is a bit long but im looking for input and
suggestions, and wanted to give a general idea of what im
dealing with
I was recently Dxd as T2 in Jan 2004, definitely threw me
for a loop to say the least. Altho I feel I have adjusted
well I am wondering if there is more that I could be doing.
Currently my BG is 97-120 throughout the day (when I don't
cheat,,,but hey I'm still learning and adjusting),,,my last
A1c was in at the time of my initial Dx was 6.4,,,
The good news is that that is remarkably low for dx; it
doesn't mean you aren't diabetic (I'm sure your doctor did
more than just A1c) but it does mean you've got an excellent
chance of achieving control with diet and exercise.
Quoted message said:I haven't had another as of yet partly due to the cost (my
insurance does not cover everything and I'm left with the
bills,,,ugh!!). I test 2-3x a day if Im "feelin funny" or
if my morning BG is higher than Id like but usually I can
only do it once (again my insurance will only pay for BG
testing 1X/day--GP is helping by getting me testing
supplies to keep cost down). I currently take avandia
4mg/day take in morn.
Someone else will comment on meds. I don't take them. I'll
mention testing frequency later.
Quoted message said:As for eating I keep my carbs to 18 exchanges or lower,,,
I'll be honest. I have never understood "exchange" diets,
and I have no desire to learn.
Quoted message said:I work second shift so my "dinner" is at midnight when I
get home,,, during the day i eat yogurt, raw veggies
(usually marinaded in some way), and fruit (I have to
buy canned due to my job,,,a little hard to eat fresh
fruit at work)
If you follow the advice I am about to give you, you will
develop a different view of the need for fruit, and which
types to eat. Canned is not one of them. I also used to work
"graveyard" shift, so I know where you are coming from.
Quoted message said:all told my carb intake is below 18 exchanges as determined
by my diabetic nurse. I try and eat every 2 hours to
maintain a balance in my intake
Good idea, but three to three and a half hours is OK for
most of us.
Quoted message said:and I have found that it has helped with my energy level. I
don't eat alot of meat especially now that the heat is
going up,,,Im attempting to get back to my vegatarian diet
but am finding it difficult because of where I
live,,,grocery shopping choices are severely limited.
You will also find vegetarian difficult for control of type
2 by diet. Not impossible, but it will make it difficult. Is
there a philosophical belief aspect here, or do you just
believe it is healthier?

Physical health is average,,,due to psyche meds i gained
alot of weight,,,altho I hae taken some off,,,Id like to
lose another 25-35 lbs btu thats not my primary concern,,,
It should be. One of the quickest and most effective ways to
achieve control is to decrease excess weight and improve
muscle tone. It's no longer "I'd like to..". It's now "I
need to.." or even "I must..".
Quoted message said:cholesterol is high normal and dropping,,, I am very
careful with fat intake (would prolly be better if I quit
eating hotdogs,,,lol,,,but they may favorite),,
Lipids are equally important indicators of diabetic health
IMO. However, on the hot dogs, you're in for a pleasant
surprise. It's the bun, not the dog, that's causing you
damage. Thought you were a vegetarian?
Quoted message said:I have arthritis and recently dxd with herniated discs in
my spine, also have another problem casuing a narrowing in
my canal,,,am taking medication for both but am in pain 90%
of the day,,..I am also bipolar but am no longer on
medication.
Others here have similar problems. I'm sure they'll
say g'day.

One note about my job,,,I work in a powdered metal factory
where the heat is now starting to break the 100 degree mark
daily,,,by mid june will be dealing with 110-130. Normally
I drink diet soda but during summer heat i drink carbinated
sparkling water (the stuff walmart sells that is
flavored,,no cals or sugars),,i have had dehydration issues
in the past but since ive reduced caffeine during summer it
has greatly reduced the dehydration problems altho not
eliminated it.
thanks for any input🙂)
OK. Now for the briefest advice you will get here. It's
also, in my opinion, the most important advice you'll get
for early management of
T2.
Go to our associated web-page and read the advice to "Newly
diagnosed". Read it twice; then put it into practice. I
don't care if you hate to test, or can't get strips through
your insurance (beg, borrow or e-bay them) or feel that it's
"over-the-top".
It works.
You'll find it at: alt-support-alt-support-Open ↗
diabetes.org/Newly%20Diagnosed.htm .
It saved my life. It could save yours.
If you can't access the page, come back and ask for
Jennifer. If you are really lucky, she might drop in.
Come back and ask questions after you read it.
Cheers Alan, T2, Australia. Remove weight and carbs to
email.
