Reccommendations for first Bike

If you have access to a good local bike shop, I'd go try some bikes out.
Some major brand mountain bikes and hybrids start close to your target
amount, but I would decide what you like before doing anything else.

I just got a good deal on a GT Avalanch. Demo. Also, I think there
are more bike deals in the winter. Get disc brakes if you can, and
aluminum frame. You can put various size wheels with disc brakes and
they have excellent braking. Aluminum frame will not rust on you.

I have no regets with my purchase of a Giant Cypress DX hybrid. I
spent $300 last spring for a new 2005 model. I've logged over a
thousand miles on her.

I'm not aware of the trails in your locale though. The trails I ride
mostly are asphalt with an occasional gravel road crossing.

I second the suggestion of a Giant Cypress DX hybrid. A couple of years ago,
I was just getting into cycling. That was my choice after much
investigation. Good bike, good price, and a hybrid (not an MTB or a road
bike but a bit of both).

Having bicycled Red Rock, outside of Vegas, I can vouch for the Cypress DX
in that terrain. You can't go wrong with the DX.

As mentioned, you should visit your LBS and ride a variety of bikes to get a
better feel of what you want. I would also recommend getting "fitted" for
your bike. It makes all the difference in the world if you ride alot.

Trek makes some pretty solid entry-level mountain bikes/hybrids in your
budget. Also, Giant and Specialized bikes are probably also within
reach. Check what your LBS has.
