  1. Hi

Is it worth using this moderated newsgroup? I posted to it a good few days ago, received an email
saying that the msg had been passed to a human and still no show. Don't get me wrong - I'm not
having a go I am just wondering if this is typical.

    Cheers

I once wanted to post to a moderated group that the moderator required a real e-mail address. I
created an e-mail address on one of my servers and submitted my message. Evidently the moderator did
not accept the message because it never appeared in the news group; however, I immediatly started
getting spam whose subject was related to the newsgroup topic to the e-mail address I had created
for the newsgroup posting. Evidently the moderator is collecting and selling the e-mail address.

Once? Oh you poor paranoid poster. They're all out to get your real name and address.

This puts you between a rock and a hard place, because to block telemarketers from your phone, you
must tell the feds your real name and e-mail address.

Not really a problem as they only need the e-mail address to confirm the request. For that I just
used an address that was live for the two minutes it takes to get the request confirmation and
    then kill it.

I do not generally have a problem with people having my e-mail address if there is a valid need for
it. I do, however, have a problem with a group moderator selling my address to spammers.

I forgot to mention that I just got a copy of your book. It is one of the most useful things I have
purchased in a long time. Very well done. Thanks for publishing it. I supsect that you probably did
not make enough money on it make it worth your time if it is like any of the technical books I have
    been involved with.

almost. he does seem to realize that in order to pull off that kind of attitude you need to at least
    be correct.

.. a lot of people seem to miss that.

Not really. rbor has been in the clutches of Moderators From Hell for quite a few years now. The
robomod software is apparently tuned to reject everything except spam, and nobody posts there. If
the people who expend their energy moderating the group expended the same energy on a CFV to
unmoderate the group, I'm sure it would pass in a microsecond. For some perverse reason, this hasn't
happened. Nobody else really gives a damn, since alt.mountain-bike is a marvelous hangout for the
MTB sector. I recommend you try there. One good way to introduce yourself is to buy a new bike and
then post asking if it's any good.

Excellent. Thanks for all of that. I will have a look now.

Your wrong. Just an email address is required for a confirmation email from the "do not
    call" website.

The feds don't care what your name is.

I don't recall ever getting an e-mail from anyone (or anything) after posting at RBOR; must be a
    fairly new practice?

It was all but dead a year or so ago -- barely any messages, and most of those were pure spam
(Moderator?!?) -- came back to "coma-like status" with one or two posts per day.

Too bad, too, because it _could_ be a decent forum for basic mtb content -- leaving the fun 'n
frivolity to the deadbeats, pervs and n'er-do-wells hangin' out at AM-B! (I don't mean you, Corvus,
    of course! ;-)

You're right. This week I signed up 4 elderly ladies of my acquaintance who are not computer savvy
(but they are unfailingly polite). I used my email address and it worked for all 4 of them.

No, not "almost." Entirely. Even if a person is correct, that doesn't ameloriate the rotten attitude
or outlook. Even Miss Manners would tell you that.

And, no, nobody misses it because even on the times he is correct, the "lack of social grace" still
    is unwarranted.

maybe so, but by the time i get around to using his advice odds are good i've forgotten who gave it
to me. truth has a life of its own.

perhaps it'd be different if it were real life and not usenet but as it stands i kind of think if
you haven't been chewed out by jobst you're not really trying.
