Hi, I'm 54 years old, and until recently have been running
20 to 30+ miles a week for about 2 to 3 years, which
included some speed work, an occasional difficult 10 mile
long run, and one 23 minute 5K race. Recently I had just
gotten the worst cold and sinus infection I ever remember
having. I was in bed an entire week end, out of work one
day, and forced my self to return to work after that, even
though I was useless there. For 2 weeks I was completely
fatigued and unable to run. Just last week, after seeming to
improve for the most part, I started trying to run again. I
lost all, I mean all, of my conditioning. The first day I
could only jog a mile, rest a while, then one more mile then
having to quit for the day. Same thing for the next 3 days.
I could add another mile each day only if I rested first.
The fifth day I had to rest entirely. The next day I
completely strained to finish a slow but constant 3 miler.
The day after that, today, I could do 3 miles, but only
after resting after each mile. I've never felt so helpless.
I'm not fatigued, I just have no strength nor endurance
anymore. I realize age has got a lot to do with it, but have
any of you gone through this? Any guidance? Thanks.

pretty clear that you're still sick and you're not doing
yourself any favours by trying to push yourself. If in doubt, see your doctor.

Sinus infections can linger and linger and linger ...
What you've described sounds viral, however the following
can only help.Go to your local pharmacy and get some saline solution (salt
water). Tilt your head back and fill your sinuses. Enjoy!
(kidding, it's actually a little unpleasant at first).
Repeat three or four times a day. You'll be surprised at the
volume of gunk, and the rainbow of colors, you hork loose.I unfortunately speak from experience. TMALSS: if you don't
clean out the gunk it'll dribble down the back of your
throat while you sleep .... festering ... sore throat ...
more stuffiness ... swollen glands .... yuk. If you don't
believe me ask an ENT (ear nose & throat MD).Surf

Perhaps you are still ill. I had a two month layoff due to
accident injuries. Was able to do 20 minutes immediately.
Then increased 10 minutes per month until previous. -

Any guidance? Thanks. As the others have said, it seems like you are still ill.
The time-frame you give does not seem to support a total
loss of conditioning. With colds, I have found zinc lozenges
to be marvelous. Studies show they boost the immune system
and shorten the duration of colds. Though it's a little late
in the game, you might want to give them a try for a day or
two and see whether a boost in your immune system kicks that
bug out of your system. Also, lots of sleep. Try to get an
hour more than you usually do per day--sneak a mid-day nap
if you can swing it.--

The time-frame
you give does not seem to support a total loss of
conditioning.Well, I'm 56 and avg. about 40 mi./wk and race occasionally.
Have had a low grade version of the flu or something like it
for going on 3 weeks. Rested a few days the first week and
resumed normal schedule - which took 2 days to flatten me.
Still tire easily and haven't run in 10 days - longest
period missed in about ten years. Nothing to do but rest and
pick up again when I get better. Suggest you do the same.Paul
