Rear Mounted Carriers

I looked up the Seat online.

We used to have a wagon that had a similar rear hatch.

What about a rack designed for a wagon or minivan? Our rack of choice was a
Thule. I think it held three bikes (perhaps two if really heavily kitted out
with panniers etc)

I honestly think most if not ANY car could be equipped with such a bike
carrier... all they need are edges to put the clips on - just like the one
around a boot or rear lift-hatch. Perhaps some high-end car with no seams
would have a problem - but then, how often do you see a Porsche 911 with a
bike carrier?

Oh! One last thing. Best thing to do is visit your LBS with your car. All of
the ones around here were more than happy to bring racks out to the parking
lot for test fittings.

I'd put the bikes in the car. My experience of non tow bar attached bike
racks is that things swing around worryingly around corners.

Buy a good one second-hand rather than a cheap one new, is my advice.

Often we go camping though, and the boot space is taken up with tents, bags
etc. We'd want to take the bikes with us.

If you have a towbar fitted to your car, consider getting a towbar-mounted
carrier - they are very stable, locakable and you can still access the boot
of the car with some, due to them having a tiliting mechanism.

If £50 is your budget, remember that if you buy a carrier that is a clipon
to the rear of the car, if you have one that obscures the
lights/registration of your car you *must* have a lighting board too - so
this adds to the expense.

I must admit, I've seen some hair-raising sights with such clip on
carriers... bikes swinging all over the place, so I certainly wouldn't go
for one of those out of choice. I'm glad I invested in a tow-bar & tow-bar
mounted carrier - solid as a rock, lockable and has a tiliting mechanism so
I can still access the boot of the car.
