Rear mech wornt out already

If it works OK whats the problem ? New jockey wheels can be fitted,
TACX used to be a good choice but there may be better ones now. I
fitted some TACX to my tourer years ago and they lasted for years, they
improved the shifting too. Change the jockey wheels first if you think
you have to, cheaper than a new mech. If you are going to replace the
mech. why not go to 105 ? much better than Sora or Tiagra. I have had
Shimano stuff last for years/thousands of miles so I'd be surprised if
yours is worn out.

A lot sloppier than when I put it on; surely it won't index properly if
there is play? althought the main problem I have had with changing recently
is rusty chain sides and links, cleaned it all up and spread a thin layer of
Finish Line over it yesterday and much better.

Are you sure this doesn't sound right?

The Jockey wheel teeth may wear out but the actual wheel bit itself doesn't
really have anything to go wrong, maybe it just needs tightening?

As for the spring, I've not had one go wrong, maybe friction in the gear
cable is causing the sloppyness.

The one thing I have had go wrong with sora mechs is that they can get bent
after a knock which means the indexing no longer works across the whole
cassette range.

I don't think more expensive mechs actually give better shifting, I think
the price diff is normally because they are lighter.

The top pulley, called a "Centeron G-Pulley" in typically overblown
maarketese, is narrower than its pivot pin and is designed to slide
sideways to line up better with the sprocket. One of Shimano's little
tweaks that makes indexing work.

If it will rock out of a vertical plane it's worn, though.

All modern upper jockey wheels have play built in, quite a lot, they call
it "float". It's supposed to help with indexing.

Maybe it's just got freeer rather than there actually being more travel.
It's not the kind of thing that wears out, afaik.

By the way, Tacx jockeys don't have any float.

^^^^ Contradicted myself there. Make that: modern Shimano and Campag
jockey wheels have float.

axle. This helps with quiet chain engagement when the indexing isn't
quite perfectly set. If it's wobbling around, though, that's a
different matter.

Thanks everyone, will take it apart and have a look. With 7 speeds indexing
is not a great problem, it seems to index on chain line more than anything.
