Rear Hub slipping

    Although I am not a professional cyclist and am unfamilliar with the tech
    terms, I have dismantled and repaired my bicycles all the time.

    Last week I bought a Shimany 24 speed Kojima hybrid. With the centre gear in
    high (lergest ring) and the rear ratchet in highest gear (smalles ratchet)
    the pedals slip about 20 degrees every turn, sometimes more often. It feels
    as if the pawls in the rear hub assembly are slipping. This happens only
    once in a long while when I'm in the next gear up at the rear. The chain
    adjustment looks spot on, but even if I alter it plus or minus it makes no
    difference.

    I have no intention of dabbling with this while the bike is new, and intend
    to return it to be fixed, but for sheer interest I'd like to have some idea
    as to what's causing the problem.

    I'd appreciate if any of you have some ideas.

    It could be the cassette body is knackered (the cassette body contains
    the ratchet mechanism on the rear hub).

    I bought a new MTB which had a faulty cassette body so it's not
    impossible on a new bike, even though cassette bodies generally last
    many thousands of kms before failing.

    If it's new, just take it back and let the shop sort it out for you.

    I'm no expere\t but the smallest gear on the rear cassette is seperate from the cassette 'cluster' & sites on the very end of the freewheel 'spline'. Maybe the mounting 'nut' for the rear cassette is loose or not fitted correctly & the smallest gear slips, jumps & spins .

    Al lthis is complete guessing through. You mentioned you just got you hybrid, so I can't assume it's already worn or knacked.

    worn freewheel...

    mine has died as well and keeps making a huge "CRACK" everytime i put the hammer down.

    and i thought campag stuff would last for ages....

    My $0/0-maintenance policy on the SS probably
    didn't do it any good on the weekend. I couldn't
    get the 15T off the back so had to crank 32/15
    up the hills. The teeth on the freewheel look like
    needles they're so worn hehe no wonder the bugger
    would slip every time I hit a slight rut up the hills..

    New driveline required. "Empty all your part bins!"

    I returned the bicycle. The shop technician told me that sometimes on
    otherwise good bikes there are trashy cassettes. Changed cassettes. I took
    the bike back this afternoon and went for a test ride an hour ago. Excellent
    compared to my K-Mart mountain bike. Not good for excercise though...
