Greetings, Over the last few rides we've done, my GF's bike has developed an annoying rear derailleur issue. If I adjust it so that it changes down ok, it won't change up properly. If I adjust it so it changes up properly, it won't change down properly. Anyone care to point me in the right direction here? From my inspection of the unit, it appears to have an internal spring which is responsible for returning the derailleur back down the gears (ie to the largest cog). Is it possible that this spring is worn out/buggered? Or is there another reason for this? I'm not talking about changing to the largest or smallest cogs though.....I realise there are stop screws for end-point adjustment. I'm only talking about the gears in between.

<snip> Sounds like it could be a 'sticky' cable. The spring may not be strong enough to pull the cable slack in one direction. First try taking it off, try and avoid pulling the cable end through the inner as a worn one may not go back through. Clean as much of the inner as you can get to then squirt as much water displacer (WD-40, crc etc..) between the inner and outer that you can. If that doesn't make much difference try a new cable (inner + outer). I always use a full outer that runs fron the shifter to the derailer. It's a tad stickier when new but stays good for a hell of a lot longer as it only gets gunk in at each end rather than at about six points along the line.
Change your cable and housing. You will be surprised to see how it will work after you do that.

As others have said, change the cable and housing. Also double-check that the derailleur hanger has not been bent. You can look at it from behind the bike and usually tell within a few seconds if it's bent. To get it aligned usually requires the derailleur hanger alignment tool at an LBS, but if you want to try to yank it by hand, it could work too.
