Rear derailleur lateral play

there's a degree of lateral from factory - it's there to allow the cage
to mitigate the extremes of leading chain line when in highest or lowest
gears. it's "worn" when it no longer changes gears satisfactorily.

Replace the least expensive things first. Clean drivetrain, new inner wire and
good housing. If it still doesn't shift well, and the shifter is working OK,
probably the rear der.

fit a another flat washer shim and clean/repack with boat wheel
bearing grease.
when you get it apart you'll see where.
put it back togethervwith another made shim washer with one side cut
out to hold the gizmo apart while it gets put together and then
screwed down
try the hardware store-may have different thickness washers
