I live 5 blocks from the ocean in Florida. I buy federal flood insurance. AS
far as I know, I am the only one in my neighborhood who does (although that
may not be true, I live in a pretty good place).
EVERYBODY asks me why?
I say, 'Because I do not want to be that ignorant [censored] on the tube saying,
"We didn't have no insurance and lost everything."'
When I tell people the cost, they always ask me why the federal flood
insurance is so inexpensive?
Easy, the government is going to bail everyone out anyway, so if they
charged too much, no one would buy it.
And I live in Jacksonville, probably the safest place for Hurricanes south
of North Caroline (we are in the pocket-armpit- area of
Florida-Georgia,--all Hurricanes take a northern track, so we are pretty
safe here).
After the hurricanes last year (my roof got a bit dinged--I replaced it this
year), I remember a lady on the tube talking about money that FEMA gave her.
Turns out they gave her too much and wanted some of it back. SHE WAS
OUTRAGED. After all, she had only spent money they gave her, money she was
entitled to!
I almost shot the television set.
I refuse to be one of those.

In Loosiana (I was in St. Bernard Parish last Thursday, now underwater)

No gas, roads are jammed, no place to go, no money to use when you get
there, your job is about to be washed away... tons of people stayed
because they had to.

Now add in the people who are there to protect and serve - the rescuers,
the food pantry workers, the gas station owner who needs to open up as
soon as possible, the grocery store that needs to open up as soon as
possible, the line workers, the city municipal workers... tons of people
stayed not because they had to, but because they needed to.

look you'll find some who deserve it, too.

On a side note, in 1995 the Army Corp of Engineers submitted a report
to congress detailing the devasting effects of a major hurricane in the
New Orleans area and requesting funding for things like shoring up the
levees and expanding evacuation routes, upgrading the pumping systems,
etc.

Congress passed a bill authorizing funding which Clinton signed.
However, in 2001, George W. Bush slashed funding for this program to
help off-set the cost of his tax-cuts. Funding was further cut after
9/11 and in early 2004, Bush eliminated almost all funding because of
the combined costs of the war and the tax-cuts.
