I haven't read the sites, but I can tell from their names that they
are sites to be avoided if 'truth' is any way an objective in your
    reading.

    food candy treat.

interesting products at wilderness familynaturals. I can't get good
shredded unsweetened coconut where I am. I use it to bulk up my low carb
    cereal

No problem finding unsweetened coconut around here and
a hell of a lot cheaper than these scammers are selling it.

There are also fresh coconuts which are usually less than a buck for an
entire coconut. If I knew how to open the things and could use them I
would. But I use dried, unsweetened dessicated coconut as well.

  7. I'm in a small New England town- the cost of gas is worse than shipping. I
do stock up when I go to a Metro area.

My mum used to hammer a small chisel into the 'holes' to get the milk out first
and then just hammer and chisel her way into the thing - brute force - LOL.

  9. I use coconut in one of my LC bran muffin recipes to replace some of the 2%
milk called for in the original. I pour boiling water over dried
unsweetened coconut and let it sit for about an hour. Then I pour the
coconut and the "milk" into the recipe. It's wonderful!
And I use coconut oil for sauteing and frying. The brand I buy has had the
flavour removed so it can be used for any food. It has a very high smoke
point and won't burn like vegetable and olive oils or butter.

  10. love the fresh ones the best- but picking them is like avocados- It might
seem fresh on the outside, but it will ruin your day if you eat the brown
    spots. it tastes like soap.

That is what my 20 year old son does with them. We buy a coconut
everytime we go to the grocery store.

Once he has basically opened it up I wrap it in a clean teatowel and
take the hammer to it to make the bigger peices smaller and get them
off the shell when they will not come away easily with a knife.

  13. While the claims are questionable, I find coconut milk to be good stuff. I
find it hard to consume coconut oil, so I just use the milk version.
Calling it a scam is a bit too harsh.

  16. I'm not that good a cook, but if I were, wouldn't there be problems making a
gravy with coconut oil? Would you use an emulsifier?

My local super WalMart carries LouAnn coconut oil.

Unsweetened shredded coconut can often be found in the frozen
fruit section of supermarkets, or dried-flaked in bulk bins.

  18. They did have it but it was more expensive. I wanted dry since I sprinkle it
in cereal and stuff. Find a whole food store or health food store. Trader
Joe bags my favorite course shredded for about $2
.. 1 packet of splenda shaken in the bag makes it something to snack on

There are various degress of 'dessicated'. Some are still flexible and about
the size of egg noodles, good for snacks.

I get frozen 'fresh' coconut at the Indian market. It comes in various
forms, shredded or chunks. They may have some that isn't frozen, just
refrigerated. Also I think I've seen some more or less cut up coconuts in
Safeway. When I tried one with the hairy brown shell, I got pieces of the
shell mixed up with the coconut meat. Mostly I used canned coconut milk,
which I think has some of the 'meat' as pulp. It's a great base for sauces,
    soups, etc.

I wouldn't pay supplement prices for 'coconut oil'. The coconut foods are
    too good to miss!
