I noticed people writing about a race. Perhaps I can help a little. It
seems like a very long race around back roads of N S. First year for
this race, what do you all know about N S ?
I performed at a busker fest in Halifax in '91, then drove around N. S.
for a few weeks , and hung out on a hippy farm.
Poorest hippy farm I ever saw. The people were doing great, it was the
land that looked poor. The soil was very rocky and clay like. The trees
were very short and stunted like. It was this way over most of the
island that I saw.
Compared to New England, it was a lot cooler and rainier. It might be
worth looking at online, what the seasonal ranges are. I predict 50 %
fog cold <70 degree, and half sunny.
The slick clay soil might be a factor in most areas. The island is
frozen most of the time, and the clay soil expands and contracts. So
all summer, expect them to be doing lots of repaving everywhere. The
roads that are being repaved are dirt and very slippery and my van was
sliding all around when they were wet. There was lots of good sunny
cool days. Several times it was cold and rainy all day, and the roads
were very slick. I was driving in a van. I'm just trying to imagine
what going up these mild, yet wet slippery slopes would be like on my
36 with it's TA tire.
I bet it will be a real fun race.🙂 Considering how hard you riders
will be pumping, the cold rainy days won't be to cold, and the sunny
days are very mild.😎
Trying to be helpful, I would suggest to carry an extra tire with tread
and maybe even some studs in the spares kit. I am likely wrong. Yet in
the rainy days I remember, I could see wanting to switch out a TA to a
knobby with studs.
I don't know the rules, I am assuming you are allowed to swap tires on
this long race. The most helpful tip I can come up with is to point out
that the soil there is a slick clay in most places. A TA, like I have
on my 36, is a great tire, but would it be the right tire for the slick
surfaces you should find in Nova Scotia?
Perhaps the entire course will be run on perfect smooth dry pavement.
If it's possible, having a choice of tires might be very helpful.😄
I drove all around N S for a few weeks, and hundreds of miles.
Beautiful place. Most places I went was slick clay, as it's natural
soil . It rained enough in the weeks I was there , that places didn't
dry out.
I wish I could be there. I am sure it will be a really fun time. Oh
yeah, I don't remember flats. It's like long distances of rolling
hills.🙂
