What would be a result of a half marathon where you would not start
laughing and saying "that person should never have run it"? Say, 5
hours is probably pathetic. How about, say, 2.5 hours? Or 2 hrs 15
    min?

I completed a half-marathon last weekend. It was my first attempt ever at
*any* sort of running at all; I'm reasonably fit thanks to a gym membership
but, at 41 years old, have never bothered pounding the streets and don't
    intend to.

However, I was persuaded to enter to support a charity that is involved with
    children with leukaemia.

I went round in a shade over two and a half hours; you can term that sort of
time "pathetic" if you wish, I was just thinking of children less well off
    than myself.

What a stupid question. Get a life and thank your lucky stars that you, or
your children, don't suffer from some life-threatening illness.

I am intrigued. Never ran, don't intend to... why do you read
    rec.running in that case?

Probably the same reason as you then!

Because, foolishly, I was looking to find some sort of constructive
advice/info in case, should I be asked to help those less fortunate than
myself next September, I can put some sort of plan together at the
gym..........treadmills are better than nothing after all.

Instead I read a post from some (no doubt American) slack-jawed [censored]
asking "what is a non-pathetic 1/2 marathon performance?"

I guess personal bests are all some people have to focus on.............I
wonder how they'll cope when they have to deal with a real crisis in their
    lives?

    Hey ho.......

you sound like you are pretty unfortunate yourself.

Try carrying a resuscitation machine with you at all times, so that
you can be revived after reading shocking usenet posts such as "what
    constitutes non-pathetic performance".

You seem to be in a crisis already, after reading one usenet post...

nah, I'm pretty fortunate insofar as I've got to 41 years old without any
major illnesses; oh, and I have the great fortune not to be born an
    American.

Sadly, the OP's question coupled with your comments merely goes to reinforce
the view that Usenet is populated with geeky losers.

You'd have gained a lot more credibility if you'd merely agreed with my
observation that the OP's question was stupid.

Lucky you that your mum was sleeping with a Brit that week, eh?

You'll fit right in then. Geeky in that you know how to hide your email address. Loser in that you
    can't hide your IP.

Hehe. The fact that The Social Outcast is replying to the Ignoramus
    strikes me as comical. ;-)

There can be plenty of information gleaned from this group. As with most
message boards, the posts run the gamut. If you want training information,
post questions. Take all advice with a grain of salt. Check it out to see
what other sites or other posters say. If there seems to be a consensus
consider it, but in the end you need to decide whether to follow any advice
    that is given.
