  1. Some people gain weight on 1000 calories/day, but very few. Your
daughter is showing the classic signs of anorexia/bulimia that is
    so common among teenage girls.

You should look for a doctor specialising in eating disorders -
they know what tests to run to ensure that she doesn't have a
hormone problem. But, 99% of the time, the problem is a mixup of
    self-image and self-esteem. Being a teenager is rough - I still
    remember mine!

No one can be more important to her than you, her father. She
needs emotional support that she can trust, and help to build her
own feeling of self-worth amidst the mess of signals she is
getting about everything from baby Einstein to sex object.

Best of luck. And, hang in there for her.

Bull. Not on a locked metabolic ward, they don't. For a mobile adult,

Not according to my Endocrinologist it's not.
I think she knows more than you do. ;-)

It's called "insulin resistance" to start, and hypothyroidism can also
contribute... along with a flat sedentary lifestyle!

    Been there......

    Cheers!

You have to generate a certain ammount of energy (ATP, heat) for the body to
    work.
This energy does not come out of thin air but out of either the body stores
(fat, glycogen, protein- in all these cases you of course loose weight) or
    the supplied food or both.

Since keeping up body functions (internal organs are working, body tissue is
being constantly renewed, body temperature has to be kept up,..) already has
to use up around 1000+ kcal very roughly it is plain and simply NOT possible
for any healthy human being to gain weight on a 1200kcal diet when being
awake and active (walking around, talking etc).

So either your endocrinologist missed a few very basic classes or you might
    have misunderstood what he/she said.

    Nope.
    It is possible.....
    and very detrimental.
But it's more common than you think,
    especially with Wilson's Syndrome sufferers.

    They don't have normal metabolisms.
And it's not all that rare.

Of course, not. I've never seen a quack diagnosis which was "RARE."
Most quacks only have few diagnoses, and figure most people have one or
    another of them.

Here's some fun stuff on Wilson's "syndrome." (Not to be confused with
the legitimate Wilson's disease, which IS incredibly rare). In 1992,
the Florida Board of Medicine fined Dr. Wilson $10,000, suspended his
license for six months, and ordered him to undergo psychological
testing. I don't think he passed, since that's the last the medical
    profession has seen of him.

    <sigh>
Did you bother to notice that there were just as many websites on google
that SUPPORTED Wilson's syndrome as said it was bunk?

Any doctor that goes against the "main stream" is laughed and and
belittled, until it turns out they were right.

    Atkins is a perfect example.

So, how do you explain the phenomenon?
Normal T4, normal TSH but low body temperature AND a lot total T3?

For your information, the body dost NOT use T4 (Thyroxine) for
metabolism! At all! I don't even know why they bother to measure it!

T4 is converted to T3 which is then converted to T2 where it is used at
    the mitichondrial level.

    Do some damned research!

If your mechanism for converting T4 to T3 does not work, you are
FUNCTIONALLY hypothyroid even if your T4 and TSH levels are normal!

Wilson's syndrome is very real. It's just that the main stream Doctors
don't seem to be able to put 2 and 2 together sometimes!

It's like the doctors that say they don't understand why low carbing
    works so well.

    Idiots.

    Cheers!

  10. I'm completely medically unqualified but in my experience people get
fat because they eat too much. This problem is called greedyness or
glutony, and is a mental condition, and should be treated as such.

And that just goes to prove how clueless you are...... ;-)

It is FAR more complicated than that!
    At least in most cases.
    Some people really are.
The kind that live on chocolate and
    monster tables full of food.

Those are the ones that weigh 400 lbs. plus.

But, it's not true for 100% of the obese population.

Poverty and lack of nutritional education (plus believing
in the food pyramid which sux with a grain based diet) is
the main cause of the epidemic of obesity. Sugar addiction
    does not help either.

IMHO soft drinks/sugar based sodas (which are fat free so seductive
to the ignorant) are one of the deadliest items on earth.
Personally, I'd like to see them outlawed.

Wilson's syndrome is probably more common than
is realized but it's not to blame in all cases.

But, the OP should at least look into it as a possibility
for her daughter. In the meantime, she needs to weigh and
measure what she eats and log it to see if her diet really
is or is not the problem. Logging keeps you honest.

    Cheers!
