Mark South said:POT! KETTLE! ANOTHER WORD!
Hi Mark
This reminds me of when someone used the word niggardly in a NG -
rec.kites possibly. The discussion became OT extremely quickly.
USAians were involved, AFAIR.

You know, I had to look back through the thread to remember what this was about
:-)

Can't recall & it wasn't really relevant. Those first four letters
"nigg" set off the explosives.

Quebecois (sp?) :-)
IIRC more correctly, the r.k NG stuff happened soon after 9/11 so I
guess USAian tempers could excused for being a little short. Again
IIRC, I do think I mentioned this off-topic thing here in u.r.c
previously, but I'm reasonably sure I first heard it elsewhere.

Indeed, Davek. A dictionary wot shows English; that's English like wot
you and me speaketh.
Very sensitive, let alone dumb, some people.
Actually, I pointed them towards <http://dictionary.reference.com/>
and/or <http://dictionary.cambridge.org/> and suggested they enter the
word "niggardly".
It didn't do much good, AFAIR & FWIW. The so called damage had already
been done. Some suggested the damage had been done a few hundred years
ago. My suggestion of entering Wilberforce & slave into Google didn't
really help much.

"Don't even go there," I thought to myself.
"But why not?" I thought a moment later.
To be honest, Michael, I wasn't peed off but I did feel angry. Why on
Earth should a fool tell me what I can and cannot say - let alone
think? My thoughs were along the lines of D'oh!

Pretty good, I'm injury-free this season barring a twist in the ankle[1] that
only bothers me when I'm running.
Now if I could make more time to cycle I'd be even happier.

Not understanding words is a real problem for some people. About 260 million
people.

I can claim so many nationalities it makes my head spin, but I'm not from any
part of Canuckistan!

[1] This is Pete Clich's fault for mentioning (in uk.rec.walking) how hard it is
to get rid of even minor ankle injuries. Curse you Pete!

Should have told them to chill out. Maybe relax by watching an old
film. "The Dambusters" for example. :-)

That remark will dog you in years to come.
