I've read in a few places that it's not a good idea to use a hub from a radially spoked (front) wheel to build a new wheel of different spoke pattern. I bought a radially spoked (32) front wheel for my mtn bike. At the time I didn't know anything about what I was buying and I thought it looked cool, so I went with that. I'm 230# and don't think the radially spoked wheel was the smartest/strongest way to go.
Now I know I shouldn't have bought it, and I've been having problems with spokes loosening up on it. I want to rebuild the wheel using the same hub (the rim is bulging around the nipples, so I'm pretty sure it's shot and part of the problem with my spokes getting loose) but this time go with a 3x pattern. I have about 1000 miles on the hub (it's a shimano XT) as a radially spoked wheel. To me that seems like not much wear on the hub, so I'd like to re-use if possible.
Am I risking a failure prone wheel if I re-use the hub?
You should be fine with a fully tangential lacing pattern. The stress will be at a right angle to the radially induced strain from the prior lacing. Relacing a tangentially laced wheel to radial is the bad combo because the frettage (displacement from the inner elbow bend) induces a stress riser at the most probable crack propagation point.
The key would be the hub flange quality. Most quality hubs are forged and have the prefered grain pattern for radial lacing. Lacing tangential is no problem.

The OP specified Shimano XT, of which none are certified for radial lacing.
If evidence of radial lacing shows in the hub, and the hub fails, Shimano won't be responsible.

phil, /some/ xt hubs /are/ ok for radial - they're listed in the shimano specs. can't recall the model #'s offhand tho.
and the advice about radial to tangential being ok, and tangential to radial /not/ being ok is correct, for the reasons stated.

On a similar subject, does anyone know of a front *track hub* (i.e. bolt-on, so velodrome-legal) which is recommended for radial spoking?
