    Not just ANY wool socks - Smartwool RBX racers. These should do the trick
    for those cold, wet, in the 30s runs. So I figure one pair of these should
    be sufficient.

    Smart wool is a hybrid wool (synthetic.) They
    come in various thickness and wick. Not the
    scratchy heavy wool your grandma knitted.

    His smartwool socks are about the same weight as a cushioned acrylic sock.
    They are the best thing to be wearing if you happen to step in a puddle of
    icy water.
