    I spend so little trying to balance I think it makes no difference to
    efficiency. It's like saying bikes are less efficient than cars
    because you need to keep you balance on them as they only have two
    wheels.

    I think a unicycle that weighs the same and has same gear ratio as a
    fixed wheel bike going up the same hill is at least as efficient if not
    more so than a bike.

    There is a hill I use for training where my Uni time and bike time are
    almost identical.

    I disagree; I think that a bike and a unicycle are different enough
    that a fixie will be no different than a regular road bike as far as
    its difference from a unicycle is concerned IF the gear ratio on the
    fixie happens to be matched to the hill grade as the optimal gear for
    that hill. Then, a road bike will have no choice but to use that gear,
    making it identical. Also, in hill climbing, a road bike will have no
    choice but to pedal all the time, getting rid of the coasting
    advantage.

    I do see your point, but I also think that a handlebar on a unicycle
    won't give as much of a boost as handlebars on a bicycle, simply due to
    the difference in width. You can get much more side-to-side torque on a
    bicycle than you can with uni bars; also, too much yanking on a uni
    handlebar or handle will cause the unicycle to wobble, whereas a bike
    will always maintain a straight line.

    Also, power can only be applied gradually on a unicycle, because, in

    power balancing, and your power output must remain relatively constant,
    meaning that in the optimal positions for crazy power action in your
    pedal stroke, you have to dampen ever so slightly, even if you may not

    "hammering" up hills, whereas on a unicycle, hammering will produce too
    uneven a power and with every pedal stroke you'll tip forward and back

    I can't refute you or even claim authority to disagree with you here,
    because you've done so many more miles than I have on your Coker and
    are probably a much better rider. However, I'm willing to bet that
    you're still spending a nonzero amount of power balancing, even if the
    "expenditure" comes in the form of actually putting out -less- power in
    order to keep the output constant to prevent mad fast tipping action. I

    Here, I do disagree. The balance on a unicycle is forward/back (and
    side to side, but that's minimal when powering on a hill). The
    forward/back is along the same axis as the transportation. In order to
    balance on a unicycle, you either have to pedal harder or softer to
    maintain your center of gravity relative to where the wheel contacts
    the ground. On a bike, the balance is left/right, and is largely taken
    care of ENTIRELY by the gyroscopic action of the wheels.
    That, combined with the fact that it is not coupled at all to the
    "engine" (i.e. the power you put into the pedals), means that it won't
    impact your performance at all, as you're free to do whatever you want
    with your legs. In fact, one could argue that the side-side balance on
    a bike gives the rider -more- freedom to output power than in a car or
    four-wheeled human powered vehicle, because, many times, when yanking
    hard on the bars to drive the pedals harder, you'll tilt side to side.

    That's AWESOME. I love hills like that! I have that one where my uni
    time is right with my bike time, but not quite there.

    I challenge you, however, to find a hill where your unicycling time is
    consistently faster than your bicycling time when you're going all out
    on both rides. If you can do this, I will eat my words! 🙂 I firmly
    believe that I (or any rider who is equally capable on a bike as on a
    unicycle) will always be faster on a road bike climbing a hill. I think
    there's an optimal grade where a uni will get close to the bike, but I
    think that even there, the bike will win, and, even then, only because
    of the power-to-balance problem on the unicycle.

  3. You would for sure beat me up a hill on your Unicycle, and me on my
    bike.

    I ride a 2:1 ratio singlespeed... I'd make it about 30 feet up the hill
    then have to dismount.

  4. The unicycle could win depending on how the bike is geared. If a racing
    bike has a limited number of gears, as most older racing bikes do, then
    there will be hills that are impossible to get up on the bike, even in
    lowest gear. A unicycle with a 20" wheel and long cranks would have the
    equivalant of a much lower gear making it possible to get up the hill.
    I have a bike that is of a similar weight to my unicycle and has 14
    gears. I know a hill that is impossible for me to pedal up in lowest
    gear on this bike. I can ride up it on my unicycle though. Therefore in
    this circumstance the unicycle wins.

  5. @caudy, YES! That would be a case where a unicycle could win! If your
    bike can't make it up the hill because its lowest gear is not low
    enough, and the grade is matched with your uni, then someone on your
    bike will get PWNED, even if they are stronger than you. It'd have to
    be a DAMN steep hill, but I'm sure they exist!

    What're those hilly streets again? One in SF, one somewhere in the
    southern hemisphere where someone rode a Coker down a hill at 29mph (or
    something, I don't remember)

  6. They definately exist. The hill I'm talking about has a handrail and
    paving stones with a horizontal grip on them so that people don't slip
    over when walking up or down it. It's THAT sort of hill. If
    onewheeldave was going to pick a city to have the race then Sheffield
    is definately the place. Any hillier and it would probably be classed
    as mountainous.

    That is hardly fair for the bike. The neat thing about bikes is that
    you can change the gears. You can even change the cassette clusters
    and chainrings to get an entirely new set of gear ratios. Back when I
    was road riding and touring I had two rear cassettes for my bike. I
    had one with lower gears (larger cogs) for climbing and one with ratios
    more suited for rolling hills and flats.

    You can keep crippling the bike till it gets easier for the unicycle to
    beat it up a hill. But that isn't fair. The more interesting
    experiment would be to find at what grade and under what conditions a
    unicycle optimized for that hill can beat a bike optimized for that
    hill.

    I have a fixie bike that is geared almost exactly twice the gear inches
    of my Coker. There are local hills that are a struggle on the bike
    that are not a struggle on the Coker. That says nothing other than too
    high of a gear makes hills difficult and slow. There are also some
    hills in the area that are too steep for me on the Coker (with 150s).
    I tried to go up some of then and I stalled and ripped the unicycle
    handle out of my hand trying to keep it going. Too steep for me with
    the 150s. That means nothing though because if I wanted to I could put
    longer cranks on the Coker or switch to a different unicycle and make
    it up the hill.

  8. I've ridden 2 hill climb races against bicyclists. Whiteface Mt (8
    miles, 8% grade) and Equinox (5mi, 12% grade, details of hills here
    http://www.northeastcycling.com/Mtn_Climbs.html). In both I beat about
    1/3 of the bicyclists. Its great fun to pass a biker towards the end
    of such a difficult ride, they just look at you and groan a funny
    sounding groan. However, I'm sure a person on a good road bike would
    always beat a person of equal fitness on a good uni up a hill like
    this. As someone said earlier, bicycles are very efficient means of
    transportation...just not as much fun as a Uni.

  9. +1, John, totally agree. I'm wishing I had a second cluster for my bike
    right now, because my 11-23 rear cassette is too high for climbing.

    I think we should assume that, on this hypothetical grade on which the
    uni can race a bike, both cycles have a gear available that is the
    optimum gear for that grade and the rider. Saying that bikes are bad
    because a 100 gear-inch fixie doesn't climb hills as good as a Coker
    with 150 cranks is like saying the C5 Galaxy sucks because its roll
    rate isn't 720 degrees per second. :-)

    BTW, I just got back from a ride (yeah, 3 AM... heh) and we climbed a
    similar hill to the 500-foot hill I mentioned in some ago-posts, and I
    -totally schooled- the bikers going up. It was sooo, so awesome! I was
    really booking to keep up on the flat ground before the hill, and they
    were all in good high gears cruising along (and away from me!), but
    when the grade started they all took their granny gears and started
    laboring, while, on the Coker, my cadence was barely affected. (I had
    the perfect hill, and was lucky that I was climbing with less serious
    roadies, which was the reason I was able to tag along on my Coker at
    all :-P) Don't get me wrong... if they'd been decent hillclimbers, I'd
    have been toast!
