I'm not sure it's about being 'clever'; but open-minded certainly, which is
probably both rarer and altogether more laudable. Don't worry about it,
Brian - this group is rife with trolls, zealots and humourless,
sanctimonious bores (some of them quite needlessly aggressive and abusive).
But if you can keep a clear head while all around are losing theirs...you
can still get quite a lot out of it.

FWIW, I'm in the anti-helmet (or, certainly, anti-compulsion) camp myself,
but I can see nothing wrong with your original post. It was derived from
personal experience, honest, and kindly meant. Anyone who responds with
abuse says more about themselves than about 'the issue'.

So, in summary:

Brian rolls up out of nowhere and says something stupid. Not only is
it ignorant, but it is a topic that it subsequently becomes apparent
he has vanishingly little actual knowledge of, and an opinion he has
applied vanishingly little thought to formulating.

Various people point out that what he said is stupid, ignorant, etc.

Brian has a hissy fit claiming he wasn't trying to force his ideas on
anyone, despite the fact that is precisely what he did actually say.
He then has further flaps about how nasty everyone is for pointing out
how dumb his statement is. Then, he goes on to bring the topic of how
horrible everyone was to him over again, but gets upset when his drama
queen performance is highlighted.

In fact, when it is highlighted, he decides to abandon all pretence of
being able to engage in rational conversation and reveals that he'd
rather embark on a campaign of ad-hominem abuse. Presumably, he
thinks calling me "cowardly little cyber bully" makes him look big and
brave, and will distract everyone from the paucity of his logic.

Ooh, and I am apparently a troll. Oh yes, I've been participating in
this newsgroup for more than 10 years specifically to get a rise out
of Brian today. Bwaa-ha-ha, my plan has come to fruition. My work
here is done.

He and others have changed my mind. It seems that I need to do a lot
more research. I am surprised, but willing to learn from people who know
a lot more than me about such matters. It's great to learn. It's fun to
learn. It's great to be wrong if you are willing to learn.

Just not sure what the people who corrected me expected me to actually
do in the face of their correctness? Beat myself up with a stick

Where have I only half apologised? OK, just to clarify: my original post
on this thread was ill judged, obviously (Though unintentionally)
