and rear so long as they are in place of and not as well as bs6102
lights.

told that there is a legislator somewhere to whom that seems like a
good idea.

I have been meaning to ask if we have decided whether such lights are
now legal or not, since I recall that the precise wording of the new
regs or law needed some further thought.

Has anyone got a definitely correct statement to make on this?

You need the Road Traffic Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1988 and later
amendments (1995, 2001, 2005) which are statutory instruments put out
by the appropriate minister.

The amendments are just the diffs, not a comprehensive document.

To get a thorough picture you will also need a copy of BS6102/3
(bicycle lights) and BS6102/2 (reflectors) which are dated according to
the scheme laid out in RVLR

Broad summary:

You must have front and rear position lights and certain reflectors.
Position lights must comply with the appropriate BS6102 revision.

You may also have auxilliary lights and reflectors according to the
much looser spec (basically colour, orientation and stability).

The most recent changes allowed cycles to use flashing red led lights
as rear auxilliary lights (IIRC) and to update the regs to use the
lated BS which allows for the use of non filament bulbs.

I found this on the ctc website.

Flashers
Prior to 21st October 2005 it was strictly illegal to fit a flashing
light on a pedal cycle. This didn't stop most people fitting them and
thankfully, flashing lights are now not only permitted, but also may
qualify as an approved light. Since BS6102/3 did not at that time cater
for flashing (but is likely to be amended to do so quite soon),
approval is granted for the time being, simply on the basis of
brightness. Any flashing lamp that is also capable of emitting a steady
light however, will be approved only if it conforms with the more
complex requirements of BS6102/3 when in steady mode.

This is what I was remembering.I have no lights that only flash, so
they need bs approval to be legal , then ( or the german K mark,
probably) if used without other, bs approved, lights.
