Besides the Im strokes; front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, and
butterfly, what other strokes are there?

    Thanks

    Micheal

I'm wondering what are "Im" strokes?
Is sculling a stroke when applied to create movement?
i.e. if you scull-backtroke from one end of the pool to the other, does
    that count?
It can be used with hands either by the side or stretched out beyond
your head. Would that make 2 strokes?
It can be used to travel forewards, backwards and sideways. Is that
another 3 strokes? And what about zigzaging, or circular directional
    movement?
Then it can be adopted underwater also. Does that create yet another
stroke identity? If so, the adaption will enable a swimmer to do all
the above whilst facing up or down, and too a lesser extent facing
    sideways.
Then there's the strokes you mention. They can all be done in reverse.
Would that make for 4 more.
Alternatively, some can be adjusted, e.g, the reverse backstroke can be
done doublehandedly with a movement not too unlike an upsidedown
    butterfly.
At the last count, I worked out I had worked out how to do 35 'strokes'
    or variation of travelling style.

IM stands for Individual Medley. This is a race in which all four of
the competition strokes are performed for the same distance in a
    certain sequence.

I suppose you can count all those as strokes, if you think they are
useful, but most swimmers consider the four competition strokes plus
sidestroke and elementry backstroke to be the only ones worth using.

    Thankyou for the clarification.

not that I've had a good swim lately, but I don't recall swimmers as
lacking in a sence of fun, so presumably you mean the Im strokes are
the only ones worth training up for. Though I might argue they miss out
on a certain amusement if they pooh poo experimentation...

    Big Snip

Individual medley--crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Don't
ask me if that is the proper order for competition. I only ever
mastered my own special stroke that I call the "stationary butterfly."

Anyone who hasn't done competitive swimming might not know what IM
stands for, so don't feel embarrassed not to know this.

My special stationary stroke is breaststroke, which comes third in the
Individual Medley, following butterfly and back. Freestyle (crawl) is
last. My technique for breaststroke is actually quite admirable, very
properly timed and all that. It simply isn't propulsive. Normal feet
seem to be the problem. My normal is that toeing in, twisted flat
position that works very well in fly.

embarrassed? Funny, but I don't recall implying such a thing.
