The Bad Guy said:There most emphatically is a runner's high
Correct as usual, Señor Malo. I also think there may be different
types or flavors - either that or the "high" is strongly informed by
your sensory inputs and whatever else is going on in your world. Set
and setting.
My experience is also like someone else mentioned: I stumbled into a
distinct runner's high more often in my first two years. Of course I
continue to get a great deal of pleasure from running, just not that
same high nearly as often.
I think at least these two factors have usually been present when I
found myself in this state.
- comfortable pace: not pushing it, but also not plodding at the
slowest possible "recovery" pace
- new turf: a break from the accustomed routes, whether this meant a
different state, city, neighborhood, or just a block east or west of a
well-worn path
So in my case some part of the equation seems to be "body on
auto-pilot; mind and senses engaged".
