The [censored] goes ballistic and jumps out of his car. He is right up my
nose, red-faced and pointing and shouting something about traffic law.
He looks like a gym teacher. I wonder for a moment if he is going to
take a swing at me, and I decide he isn't, so I sit through his
diatribe and then pull out my cell phone. He immediately beats it back
    toward his car.

Sounds like you need a Mongo riding with you. Either that, or a better
"death stare". I used my death stare this morning on the way home on
some dumbass who almost clipped me. They hit the power locks.

The cell phone is a mighty, mighty weapon. I never street ride any more
without it within quick reach. Flip it open and start talking to the
police dispatcher, and the most deranged road-rager backs down.

    So far.

Agreed... We were out walking our dog one night when a stupid A-hole
started following us in his SUV... He finally pulled up and began some
tirade about our dog pissing and crapping on his expensive lawn...
    yadda yadda yadda...
Simple thing is our dog walks and stays in the street... we pick up his
    [censored]... as is the law.
I looked at him and very calmly asked him. "who are you?"
I guess I said something awful because he started another tirade.
I then told him if he a problem he should call the cops... in the
    calmest voice I could muster.
He starts screaming about how he doesn't need the cops because he is
going to poison his lawn and/or kill my dog... I couldn't quite get his
point, but it was an obvious threat.
I walked away... Trust me I wanted to drag him out of the car and use
my mag lite to crush his skull... but I kept it together...
He starts yelling down the street so I turned around...whip out my
cellphone and told him 'Alright... you threatened me so I am going to
call the cops and see what they think."
It was like I pulled out a gun, becasue he put his brights on so I
couldn't make out his plate and reversed at high speed out of there...
I follwed him for a bit but he finally took off and we went the way we
came so we might see where he lived.
We got all the way home with no sign from him. When we got to the front
of our house another car pulled up. I looked in and it was him!
He must have stashed his SUV at home and got another one and came
    looking for us.
When he realized I was looking right at him he turned off his lights
    and took off...
I called the cops... made a complaint and now walk the dog in the
    school yard across the street.
We haven't seen him since but it was a pretty creepy situation.

Its worked for us. I love the look on their face when you flip it open and
start dialing. They look like deer in headlights, except running backwards.

I find the smell phone "solution" quite punkish. If you're going to
"get involved" in a confrontation by acknowledging them, or you can
ignore most goofballs and they will more than likely go away. If you
can't back up your play on your own, you have no game. Getting away
from a motorist while on a bicycle is very easy most of the time.

Punkish, but effective. I'm a strong believer in fighting dirty. Who
said something to the effect of, "If you walk into a fair fight, you
    didn't plan properly"?

I like the cell phone. I'm never trying to "get involved" and will
almost always walk away given the option. But if someone is harassing me
for just minding my own business, I say use everything in your power to
make them stop and/or make them sorry they did it.
On some of our rural roads with no crossroads for miles and barbed wire
separating you from the limited cover that sage brush provides (whatever
good that might do), you don't have many options. Often the phone won't
work either, but the other guy doesn't have to know that.

It's called knowing your surroundings. There was a 10PM curfew where I
grew up and the cops were always trying to contact me after hours, but
somehow never caught up with me. I had a lot of practice when I was a
    kid.
