Registration for it is closed. But, what if I just show up and try
running it. I won't get the T shirt and official time from the chip,
but, would they let me run it?

You can often buy entries from somebody who is registered but
unable to run. Their name appears in the records but you're on
    the road.

But I agree with Donovan that you would be crazy to try to run a
marathon at this time. At least get in an 18 and 21 mile run
first so you have at least some experience with the distance.

I think Disney World is still open. That's the first week of
January and would give you a chance to get in a couple long runs
and a taper. Or you could run Las Vegas at the end of the month.

If you have been an active person most of your life then there's no reason
you couldn't go and run/walk a marathon after a couple of longer run trials,
but expect to be pretty wasted and don't be too surprised if you get
injured. In this case I wouldn't increase my running if you are going to
try a marathon this fall, just do a couple of long "runs" a few weeks apart,
rest well after them, and save your body for the race. This is more an
    exercise in finishing and experience.

On the other hand, to run your best at longer distances you whole body has
to be up to the pounding and you've got to be very aerobically fit, and that
could take a year of training for some, and a few years for others. Muscles
respond relatively fast to training, but bones, tendons, and ligaments take
much longer to adapt. Personally I'm only about 1/2 way there.

There are dozens of marathons besides those larger ones, check out:
