"Indifference to evil is more insidious than evil itself. It is a
silent justification affording evil acceptability in society."

    Abraham Joshua Heschel, Jewish philosopher.

Through Psychiatry's stigmatizing labels, easy-seizure commitment laws and
often brutal depersonalizing "treatments" thousands needlessly fall into a
coercive psychiatric system which denies the most basic of human rights.

Respect is given for medicine, practiced as medicine, in a spirit of honest and
ethical endeavor, and with due consideration to primacy of the patient's needs
and health. However, there is every argument with the seduction and
contamination of medicine by psychiatrists whose totally unscientific and
fraudulent contributions threaten to pervert not only the position, honor,
humanity and value of medicine, but to wreck the lives of millions of patients
who simply come looking for help.* * *

Thank you for this quote, Jan. I will add it to the list of random
quotations which appear on The Millenium Project.

Rabbi Heschel was not talking about psychiatry, he was talking about
racism and bigotry. He shared a stage with Martin Luther King only ten
days before King was murdered. To twist the words of someone like
Rabbi Heschel to support the abandoning of sick people is not only
offensive to him and everyone else who has a conscience but is itself
an example of indifference to evil.

You can rant on all you like about "insane rage" but the sentiments
expressed in this passage by Rabbi Heschel are the principles by which
    I live my life.

Here is the full paragraph that is the context for the quote:

"There is an evil which most of us condone and are even guilty of:
indifference to evil. We remain neutral, impartial, and not easily
moved by the wrongs done unto other people. Indifference to evil is
more insidious than evil itself; it is more universal, more
contagious, more dangerous. A silent justification, it makes possible
an evil erupting as an exception becoming the rule and being in turn
    accepted".

It would have been useful for Jan to indicate the source of this
quote. It only takes a small sniff to detect the rotten stench of
    Scientology.

    Time to quote L Ron Hubbard again;

"For those of you whose Christian toes I may have stepped on, let me
take the opportunity to disabuse you of some lovely myths. For
instance, the historic Jesus was not nearly the sainted figure has
been made out to be. In addition to being a lover of young boys and
men, he was given to uncontrollable bursts of temper and hatred that
belied the general message of love, understanding and other typical
Marcab PR. You have only to look at the history his teachings inspired
to see where it all inevitably leads. It is historic fact and yet man
still clings to the ideal, so deep and insidious is the biologic
    implanting".

Cue Jan to tell me that she acknowledged the source of her quotes by
pointing us to the Psychbusters page. That will merely prompt me to
ask about taking responsibility for what is in the links she posts.

If you sit still long enough, you will see other sayings appear.
