Here's my philosophy. Dogs, and cat for that matter, have very short life
spans, when compared to humans. Of course, to them, it is their entire
normal life, but to those of us who value their companionship, it IS a very
short time. Therefore, I believe it is important to maximize both their
total life span AND their healthy life span. There are very few things we
can do in this regard. Regular veterinary care, protection from hazards,
regular exercise, and...proper nutrition.

The cost difference between generic Costco brand and the best super premium
brand, over the lifetime of the dog, is minimal, but the increase in
lifespan, especially healthy lifespan, is, to me, priceless.

Dog foods can be divided into 4 groups, with regard to quality of
ingredients. The big dog food companies...Hills, for example...want you to
believe that quality is irrelevant; that percent macronutrients is the
important issue. They want you to believe that as long as a dog food has x%
protein, y%calcium, z%phosphorus, etcetera, that it's a good food. Protein
from free range chicken and protein from road kill pigeon is the same, to
them. You could LITERALLY make a dog food that meets AAFCO guidelines from
elephant [censored] and the slop shoveled off the slaughter house floor.

So, for me, quality of ingredients is the key issue. In this regard, let's
start at the bottom.

Generic store brands. The 50 pound bag for $8 stuff from Wal-Mart, Costco,
whoever. Garbage. No difference between any of them. Most contain traces of
pentobarbital, which comes only from euthanized pets. No, thanks. Leave this
stuff to the operators of puppy mills, may they rot in hell.

Moderate step up are the common brands found in every supermarket: Purina
Dog Chow, Kibbles And Bits, etcetera. Better than the generics, but not by
much. Again, small difference in quality among the members of this group.

Large step up are the premium dog foods, found in some supermarkets and all
pet stores. Much better quality, but far from ideal. However, a dog would be
much better off eating these than anything from the lower groups. Examples
are Science Diet, Iams, Nutro.

An ENORMOUS step up in quality, where your new puppy deserves to be, are the
super premium dog foods. These contain the highest quality ingredients, are
packaged with care, and are expiration dated. Some pet stores carry them,
but are easily obtained online. The differences between them is not quality,
but philosophy. Some believe in mixing many protein sources, others believe
not. Some use chicken, some do not like the quality available of most
chicken in the US. Some like a higher % of protein, others a bit lower.
Etcetera. But quality is extremely high for all.

There are only a couple dozen such foods in the US and Canada. Local
availability could be the overriding factor. Remember, they are ALL most
excellent. Some examples are:

amazing assortment of canned foods. This provides varying taste, for
enjoyment, and a wide range of protein sources. But, as I stated above, they
are all excellent.

I am a dedicated member of the Life Extension Foundation, and take dozens of
supplements, so, as you might imagine, I supplement the dog food.
Weight-adjusted amounts of plain regular yogurt, Missing Link, LEF's Dog
Mix, Pet Tab, and flaxseed oil.
