    Google is a law unto itself, some other sites hereabouts have
    mysteriously fallen from favour.

    Reiterating a couple of points already made, fix the errors shown by the
    W3 Validator (add a DOCTYPE declaration as instructed by the Validator),
    and learn to use CSS style sheets before the site becomes any more
    complex. Font tags and attributes such as bgcolor are not a good idea.

    </br> is forbidden - it doesn't make sense.

    I would lose the hit counter. They may have been cute years ago but are
    now considered unprofessional at best and childish at worst. Besides,
    the number they display is irrelevant (some gullible people actually
    think that is the number of site visits).

    Your email address is in plain text on the page - you really should
    encode it to avoid problems with spam.

    Good luck with your British Walks page. Nice to see the routes offered
    in downloadable form, that is the way forward.

    Thanks to all for the replies - will follow them up in the next couple
    of weeks. We were walking today (avoided the rain!) and have the next
    two weekends walking as well, so somehow need to fit in work and chores
    as well the web page work.

    I can use Front page at work, so I guess this will help with the style
    sheets etc.

    Will negotiate with Dennis to remove the counter - anyone any
    experience of removing toys from boys? :-)

    Hopefully in a few weeks time will have some walks for our British
    Walks page - will keep to the circular ones. Today was an A-B with the
    help of a coach.

    I have permission (grudgingly) to remove counter.

    Is there anything we can use (non visible) to track visits to site? Not
    for spying, just that we would like an idea of how many people are
    visiting.

    bit, it makes it sound trickier than it really is. It's just a format
    description file of how different tags should be displayed, and is quite
    easy to get the hang of. The main point is to separate the format from
    the content which makes the whole thing cleaner, and *much* easier to
    reformat (so, if I want a new background for all my pages I just change
    the background-image descriptor for the <body> tag in the CSS file all
    my pages use and voila!).

    There are many tutorials around, Jessett have some good ones:-

    Basically, and ideally, all the visual attributes of the website (fonts,
    text sizes, colours, borders etc.) are defined in a small CSS text file
    and kept separated from the structure and content of the web pages. You
    can then change the appearance of any of these elements throughout the
    website simply by making a trivial change this small CSS file.

    When you realise how important accessibility is in any site, this is
    very valuable - for example, ensuring users can change the font size in
    their browsers without messing up the page structure.

    There are very sophisticated you can do with CSS, but that's the most
    important idea.

    Your site is hosted on the webspace provided by your ISP, so it depends
    what facilities they provide, which I suspect are very few, they don't
    give you much control. Generally ISPs think people will use the token
    webspace to host a few pictures of themselves and the dog etc. and don't
    take it seriously at all.

    If your site was hosted with a dedicated webhost provider, you would get
    access to server tools that give that sort of information. On a typical
    UNIX based host (like ours for instance), the AWStats reporting tool
    gives a lot of very detailed visitor logging information, broken down
    and presented in every form you could wish for, and includes the number
    of unique visitors (never perfectly accurate but a good approximation).

    I'm not aware of anything that can be done easily on the client side
    (i.e. on your pages) to count unique visits/visitors.

    and content!

    In terms of content particularly liked your Brocken Specture phot, and
    the section on poles - feel a link coming on.

    thanks for the info, will be following up later.

    Also thanks for information on counters - guess we will come back to
    this if we have to change our hosting, at the moment we will stay with
    current ISP until we outgrow or change providers.

    With regards to our British Walks Page, was thinking about this last
    night and have decided we will keep to documenting our circular walks -
    this will cut out the club walking we do (usually A-B) and make the
    task more manageable in terms of having time on the walk to make route
    notes and take pictures, and more importantly the time do do the web
    pages.

    Yesterday everytime I took a picture I fell behind and had to catch up.
    Guess there are pro and cons to being out with a group!

    sub3000 disappeared without a trace for last year.. and now is
    returned..... Shows up very well amongst all the list sites and
    gazzeteers.

    program.

    I just taught the AVCE Webpage design unit using this abomination. Never
    again.

    CSS is brilliant and really comes into its own when you want to make
    site wide changes and you have a large number of pages.

    And I'd recommend Notepad 2 from flo's freeware.

    I wrote a PHP counter that sets a session cookie. It's reasonable at
    counting unique visits but is only really a bit of fun. Sadly, will not
    work with free webspace.
