  1. Sorry for your loss and hope you get better real soon. You know, it could be
how you feel about your aunt's death causing the sickness. Some people can get
    diarrhoea caused by stress.

Stood outside for over an hour in the windy cold yesterday for a funeral,
then squeezed into a house full of people for whatever the thing after a
funeral is called where you eat and hug everyone. And now I'm sick. And
sad, because I miss my aunt and it felt weird to be at her house without
her there, and I know how hard it's going be for her kids. I was going to
go over again today and spend time with them, but I'm really really sick.

  2. I went to the doctor yesterday, turns out I have tonsilitis. Which in a
way is good news, because it can be cleared up with antibiotics. I'm
already feeling a little better. Last night was scary though. I'd taken
my prescription, but it doesn't have pain killers and my throat was hurting
really bad, so I took some Tylenol, and about an hour later my throat was
still hurting and I wanted to go to sleep, so I took some Nyquil and I was
finally able to go to sleep. About two hours later, I woke up completely
drenched in sweat, my pillow was soaked, my heart was racing, and I was all
freaked out like I'd had a nightmare, but I didn't remember actually having
one. My guess is it was either from the fever or too much medicine. But
today was bettter. No more fever, my throat feels scratchy but not on
fire. My sinuses are still clogged up and my neck is killing me for some
reason, but I should be able to go back to work tomorrow.

Yeah. Liver problems, huh? How many times in a lifetime do you have to do
that to cause problems? Because, I almost never take painkillers, and I
only take Nyquil when I'm coughing or sniffling so bad I can't sleep. This
is the only time I know of that I've ever overdosed on something.

The problem with acetaminophen is that it's usually safe - except when
    it's not. <G>
Okay, putting on more serious face now. The drug can injure your
liver if you take a too-high dose just once. Heck, it can injure your
liver if you take a regular dose but do so for an extended period of
time. It kind of all depends on how your liver handles it. There are
certain liver enzymes involved in the breakdown process for different
substances and if your body doesn't make a high enough amount of that
enzyme normal doses can take your liver out. Since your liver
processes all sorts of substances sometimes it prioritizes what gets
processed first. That leaves the stuff that's lower on the list free
reign to hang around and cause trouble while they wait their turn. In
the case of the meds you took the alcohol in the Nyquil got bumped to
the top of the list when it showed up. For that period of time all
the acetaminophen from the Tylenol that hadn't been metabolized yet,
plus the acetaminophen from the Nyquil itself was free to cause
    trouble.

In all likelihood you didn't hurt yourself at all BUT it's something
you have to be aware of because there are all sorts of things that can
leave you open to problems. Being sick, having a fever, alcohol and
not eating for a while are all things that can cause enzyme
availability to fluctuate. With a liver it's better to be safe than
end up on a transplant list hoping someone dies with a compatible
    organ. <yikes>

Thanks Carmen. I appreciate the info, but now I'm all freaked out! How
will I know if it damaged my liver? Will it hurt or something? Now I'm
scared of tylenol. Does aspirin do the same thing? Except aspirin doesn't

take anything, my throat hurts so bad I can barely swallow water, and I gag

  7. Luna, aspirin is cleared by the kidneys. Ibuprofen is too, and it is a
fever reducer. How long have you been on the antibiotics? (not up to date

Take a big deep breath and relax. Tylenol is a great drug, you just
need to treat it with respect. Following the package directions ought
to be just fine. When I say "extended periods of time" I'm talking
weeks into months. One of my husband's doctors told us about an
unfortunate case he'd recently seen - a young soldier who popped
excessive Tylenol for a bum knee instead of taking it in to be looked
at. He was an infantryman, and in the Army culture you usually suck
it up and drive on when it comes to infantrymen. Bad choice, and it
cost him his liver. I don't know how the story ended, or if he ever
got a transplant. I hope so.
If it were me I'd take the Tylenol when necessary, paying attention to
dosing schedules. I wasn't trying to freak you out, just make you
aware of what the drug can do. I'm sorry for freaking you out.
BTW, if your liver went seriously bad you'd start turning that odd
yellow and have fevers and stuff. You'd be sick.
    Just rest and get better.
    take care,
    Carmen

  9. I woke up sick Monday morning, and I've been on the antibiotics since
Tuesday evening. I feel better than I did, but not 100% healthy yet.
Every once in a while I think "I feel fine! I'm better!" then I'll stand
up and get dizzy, or I'll try to talk and lose my voice a little. I was
planning to go back to work today, but my boss said she already got someone
to cover for me and I should stay home till Monday, since I have Fridays
    off anyway.

I came in to this conversation late, but first of all, relax. The
dosage of Tylenol that will cause liver problems is much higher than
having taken a single double dose. Don't continue doing that, but
    don't panic either.

Secondly, why do you say that aspirin doesn't have fever reducers?
Aspirin IS a fever reducer. It does 3 major things - it reduces pain,
it reduces fever, and it reduce inflamation. If it was introduced as
a new drug today it would be a prescription drug, but because it had
been in such widescale use before the rules came into play they
"grandfathered" it in to let it continue as over-the-counter.

From your description of the pain and the fact that you're taking
antibiotics, it sounds to me like you've been diagnosed with Strep
Throat. In a way, that's good news - because antibiotics can really
help with that. It takes a few days, then the improvement is usually
    dramatic. Hang in there!

This is very true. I recently found out I have liver damage

You can take either aspirin or ibuprofen with Tylenol (but not with
each other) and they both can reduce fever. I'm allergic to narcotic
painkillers (codeine, percodan, vicodin) so I'm usually stuck with
combining ibuprofen and acetominophen for anything that involves
    serious pain.

The one double dose of acetominophin probably didn't do lasting
damage, but it's something to be aware of. My niece damaged her
liver taking ordinary doses of tylenol while drinking (too much)
    beer.

I don't know the circs. but it's very possible. Acetominophen and alcohal
are a bad combo. Because it's an over the counter drug here, we tend to
think that these things are as safe as mother's milk. Used according to
directions, it should be (unless you're unlucky), but if you're of the
"two are good, so four are better school" you can do yourself some real
    mischief.

I'm allergic to NSAIDs, which eliminates all the OTC pain drugs that
actually work. I don't find tylenol particularly good at alleviating pain,
so when I needed a pain pill I used to take it in <ahem> somewhat higher
doses. When I did a little more reading I found that honestly wasn't such
a bright idea. That said, I didn't seem to do myself any long term harm
and my liver is still nice and minty fresh. So, I wouldn't get all
paranoid about avoiding it entirely, just follow the package instructions.
They tend to err on the side of safety when writing them so you'll be
    fine.

If you're thinking about the Bintlet (tylenol seems to be the only thing
my sister can give her sprogs so I assume it's pretty much the same over
there), as long as you're sticking to the recommended doses it's quite
safe. I'm assuming she's not much of a drinker, just yet. <g>

True; she's kicked her booby habit <g>

There have been times when the teething has been so bad, and has gone on
