I just watched Paula Deen on Oprah's show and she said "We're all
about flowers in our house. Brandon and I just love flowers" Who's
Brandon and what happened to Michael Groover? Inquiring minds want to
    know.....Sharon

Yew pore thang. Two of my least favorite personalities on stage at
    the same time. LOL.

I don't watch either on a regular basis, only if they have an
interesting topic. The show with the inventions caught my eye. I liked
the peeler, since it's aggravating picking up peelings. The others were
    ok too. .....Sharon

Funny, as I read that I could really hear that nasal Southern
marbles-in-the-mouth whine of hers. I don't mind watching her but her
accent really (OB food) grates on me.

  4. I've been reading the Paula bashing with interest. Normally I can't
weigh in on the television food personalities because I haven't seen
enough of them to tell them apart. I think they're ALL horrible and
click right past. I used to say that the only one I recognized was
Julia Child. That changed with Paula Deen.

I don't know why I caught the show, but I immediately adored her as an
    entertainer. I don't know what she's like off-air, but her on-air
persona is great. The recipes struck me as a tad on the salty fattening
side, but I like those now and then, and I like learning about things I
don't ordinarily make. I like good home cooking and didn't grow up in a
good home cooking house. This was catch-up.

If I were watching the show for pure instruction, I'd find it lacking as
she doesn't give enough close-up and background information for me to
make the dishes myself. You clearly need the accompanying cookbook. I
saw that right away. But as entertainment? She's great. I even recall
remarking to Jim, "I don't normally like cooking shows, but this lady is
    great entertainer.

I adore the accent. As I grew up in Miami, I don't have it myself, but
I love the American Southern accent. That's what a lot of people in the
U.S. sound like! A good Southern accent has a musicality all its own.

I've never seen Oprah straight through. (There's an exception. An
online acquaintance was on the show and told everyone he knew to watch
it that day.) I don't care for the daytime t.v. format. I believe
Oprah has done some great things. That doesn't mean I have to watch her
    do them.

I'd say Paula Deen was a better performer than Oprah. It's a cool thing
to watch salesmanship as performance art. Deen comes across with so
much upbeat enthusiasm that I just want to watch her all day. It's rare
to find someone whose personality comes through the t.v. like that. She
makes it look like she's talking to me personally. I'm well aware that
she doesn't know me from Adam's off ox, but pretending is part of the fun.

Our cable service got cut so I'm not getting the food network anymore,
but I'll still speak up in defense of Paula!

I think Paula is probably a lovely person--someone not intimidating and
someone you'd feel comfortable talking to. However.......I too find her
southern drawl annoying to listen to for very long. Especially annoying is
when she says 'ol' for 'oil' and 'bowl' for 'boil'. So it's 'olive ol' and
    'bowl the shrimp'. Ridiculous.

But she doesn't *have* "a good Southern accent" if you know what I mean?
Her accent borders on lower class. She is south Georgia-Alabama all
the way. There are many "southern accents" just as there are many
different accents for people just in NY. You'll hear variations based on
locale as well as education and socioeconomic background.
She grates on my nerves just listening to her twang (not a drawl)
although she's obviously a friendly person or appears easy to like.

Probably something you have to develop a taste for, like cilantro.

I'm on record for saying I like Paula. Having said that, she has
    increasingly
laid on the southern drawl with a trowel. She didn't always sound that
(sorry) bad. I've heard her put a hard y'all into one sentence three times.
Not like, y'all ... like y'awwwwllll. Paula, please.

The way her sons do that hick thing on their show, it makes my skin
crawl. I've seen them often enough on Paula's show to know that's
not how they talk. HowDEEE! Give me a break.

I like Paula too. Well, I really liked her much better a few years ago but
still find her shows informative and entertaining. Having said that <g>...

My aunt lives in Baton Rouge. Her accent varies depending upon her stress
level. Another friend is from Lexington Kentucky. Her drawl is different
than my aunt's. Go figure 😉

Her sons are mama's boys in the extreme IMO. I don't like their show and
have seen it maybe twice. For the life of me I can never remember their
names. One is married with a baby. The other is single. The married one
is extremely pleasant and a wonderful host, according to friends that met
him in Savannah. According to a show of Paula's, the unmarried one was
voted most eligible bachelor in some publication. I have my own ideas on
the reason he is so "eligible", but I can *never* trust my 'dar
when it comes to Southern men. I've almost always been wrong.

Heh. Interesting you say about the varying accent, but I don't
know why Paula's seems to be getting stronger the more comfortable
    she gets.

(laugh) I thought the same thing, and I don't know why. They trotted
out a girlfriend for him for one show. Difference was you could see that
Jamie was head over heels for his then girlfriend. Not so much Bobby.
    Whatever.

Pick up peelings? I just peel directly into the trash, or

Sometimes a take a plastic grocery bag, open it flat on the table and
peel into/onto that. This is great for peeling & deveining shrimp,
    too.
