I'm not sure the metal detector would pick up a ceramic knife.

I was just recalling his canned speech and I think he said limited pat
down only if he gets a hit from the metal detector. In any case there
was no search of the "package" area which is where I'd hide a ceramic
    knife if I had one.

If it were up to me, carry on anything would be banned. This would

One of the great things about carry-on is that it allows you to carry
a bag of essentials for if/when the airport loses your luggage.
Speaking of which, there a store east of here in Scottsboro where all
your lost luggage ends up, just in case any of you were wondering if
it really does fall down a black hole.

mean you can only come to the security area wearing one layer of
non-baggy clothing. The chaos caused by people running [censored] through
those machines is, in my view, what makes the whole process such a
sham. If all those people running security could simply focus on each
and every person coming through then it might actually be worth
something even for clever evildoers. This would clearly require a
MAJOR shift in how airlines treat checked bags. I have gotten bags
back with contents that look like they were literally run over by a
steamroller (oddly the exterior is never scuffed or anything but then
again it is pretty durable material). Perhaps a "general" checked bag
fee (maybe free) and a "fragile" checked bag fee (including insurance)
so that you can check your laptop and feel secure that it wont arrive
looking like something Picasso would dream of.

Or just continue the dog and pony show.

Essentials? Talk about an abused practice! Having not flown in a number
of years I was totally shocked on a recent flight of what people
consider to be 'carry-on' baggage. Its like anything goes if you can
lift it over your head and squash it into the overhead compartment! The
lady in front of me had one of those pullcart luggages, an extra large
duffle bag and a comparibly as large handbag/purse, all of which she
stuffed into the overhead area with some help of two nearby taller
males who had to forcibly push on the doors to get it shut. All of her
'essential'stuff shouldve been checked baggage IMHO but noooo they let
her thru with it. Then when it comes time to disembark, the time
consuming ritual of everyone trying frantically to get their overhead
stuff down without beaning everyone near them becomes almost as time
consuming as actually going and retrieving your luggage from the
roundabout. I think they need to make some drastic changes in what
people can or cannot take with them on the plane, how checked baggage
is transported/tracked, and manhandled, and forget confiscating peoples
toenail clippers as a security measure.

Just came back from shopping at [censored]. I got my airline approved hard
case for my clubs and picked up a new 4 wood along with two boxes of
balls. I'll be teeing it up a week from Thursday in Titusville. Oh
    yeah!

Joni, haven't you ever had luggage lost? Every been stuck for hours at
the airport while the belt is down and your luggage is sent to the wrong
place and you wait and wait and wait while considering whether you
    REALLY need that carseat?

Haven't you ever had to wait in enormous lines to check your luggage and
then wait in enormous lines to show your boarding pass to get into the
secure area and then wait through enormous lines to get through security
only to stand in an enormous line to get on the plane? Why wouldn't you
want to skip one of those lines?

Air flight is like a cattle call these days. It's so unreliable it
isn't funny. Whenever possible I won't check luggage because you never
know when you're going to get separated from your luggage for DAYS while
you're held hostage in the airport by snow or delayed flights or broken
planes or whatever. I've spent more than one night awake all night in
an airport trying to get a flight out.

I booked a direct flight from Florida to Connecticut in April months
ago. A few weeks ago they cancelled that flight... just decided people
in Florida didn't need to get home after April vacation. Anyway, I got
myself re-booked on THREE flights (14 hours of flying in lieu of a 4
horu flight) and I'll wager dollars to donuts that I don't get home that
day. Three planes to not leave on time, three planes to get cancelled,
three airports to have delays... I'll bet my small kids and I will be
spending another night (or two) in an airport concourse somewhere.

I'm bringing my luggage with me.

By the way, on the subject of air safety, it's my opinion that it's all
for naught as long as we have opposable thumbs. It's just some pablum
for the masses. "Land of the free" indeed.

    Oh, that ended long ago.
Today it's "Land of the Safe."

I have. I still hate the dipshits who want to haul all their [censored] down
the aisle, monopolize the overhead space, and make me wait to get to my
seat and to get off the plane. They can take their chances with the
rest of us. And yes, that includes you. If you don't like the risks,
    don't fly.

Be irate all you want, but you're irritated by the wrong thing. I look
at the risk and mitigage them the best I can. I choose to carry on as
much luggage as I can carry most of the time. (If I have to check
luggage then I'll pack differently and check most of it.) I'm having
trouble believing that I delay you any in the plane... are you one of
those guys standing up as soon as the plane stops before they've even
opened the gate? Hint hint: it's not ME holding you up, it's the fact
that the plane doors aren't open.

I just skimmed an article saying that the European airlines are
instituting fines and compensation for shoddy dealings on European
flights. That means all the [censored] that U.S. consumers put up with from
the airlines won't "fly" in Europe without penalty. The article
mentioned that U.S. consumers are driven by lowest possible fares and
are willing to put up with no-show flights and missing luggage and
delays in their quest for the lowest possible ticket.

I'm sick of it. So mostly I don't fly.

This is exactly what I mean. Just because someone has had their luggage
lost at one point in time or heard all of D's horror stories, (and as
someone else posted, it *is* rarer than you think when you think of the
millions of bags that do get to their right destinations) doesnt give
you the right to carry on multibags with the kitchen sink, 'justincase'
your checked baggage might get lost. Yeah you *might* crash and burn
too, but we fly anyways ya know? As I said, I think stricter
enforcement of what constitutes a 'carryon' bag should implemented. Not
only does it take up the time getting on and off the plane with all
these bags being hoisted stored/unstored, but all the prescanning
lineup [censored] pisses me off while I wait there bagless - here scan my
sweater/book and let me get on ahead of these yoyos who insist on
carrying their life in a suitcase! It just pisses me off even tho I
maybe fly three times a year at most. I also mentioned that yes they
should have a more secure way to pick up your luggage as well. They tag
em why not have attendants to match/scan tags to give them to the right
people or something a bit more high tec than standing at a roundabout
where anyone can pick up your bag on purpose or mistakenly it doesnt
matter, they do need a better system. Flying the friendly skies really
needs to be revamped in many ways, but the carryons allowed is one good
    place to start.
